Default ps3 Help needed ASAP

My sons ps3 is best part of 5 years old now & has started to freeze when playing games or watching DVD's.

I spoke to a guy in the know & he said its normally a sign it was nearing the end of its life so basically i need to know how i save all his data?

He has all the extra maps for black ops etc & obviously dont want to lose it all.

So in a nut shell, What do i do?

Also can i transfer it straight to a new ps3?

Thanks J.

You would have to save it all to a big USB stick or external hard drive, then you just copy it onto the new ps3. Easy!

In fact if you've got both ps3's side by side I've just saw you can do this:

You won't lose map packs etc, everything you've bought is stored in the PS Network.

As to the above method, that's fine if you trust your new one won't fail. If you're that bothered about data then store it on an external hard drive, much safer.

As said above, copy game data to a hard drive or pen drive and copy them over to a new system, some games will not support 'backing up and restoring' game data but the majority do.

Don't worry about the maps, on the new system log into the PSN with his ID and go to the store and it will let you download the map packs there, they can only be shared between 2 consoles though.
