Right, I'm back, freshly installed version of 98SE
Now, got probs already
My display is stuck on 640x480 res and it won't let me change the thing to 1280 res
Also it only has the option to view in 2 colour modes ''2 Color'' and ''16 Color''
Why cannot I not change to 1280 res and 24million colours or whatever it used to be?????
Also, it asks me to login now every time I boot up - never used to do that

Yes
In a way yes, but hopefully now I won't have the major problems I was having with all this hi jacker virus spyware shit
Just wish I could get my settings back
Cos it is on board sound an graffix, I didn't realise I would need to save the drivers before reformatting.... Fook knows how I get sound and graffix shit to work again

To put word back in, u will need microsoft office, which is a seprate program from Windows. As for you audio, you will need drivers for that too, if you put Win XP in it would 99% set everything up, as Win 98 doesn't have drivers for everything.
You got any CD's with the computer?
If everthings onboard, have i got a CD for the Motherboard with all the drivers on?

could you not go through your programme files an find the spyware hijackers shit.
or even in start go to run and type msconfig this will tell you what the computer runs when you boot your system up as this is where you think mmm
what the fuck is my computer running that for what the fuck is that name there "mr hacky" after you stop these from taking all your ram up your system will be a lot quicker from startup as you are not utilising so much ram running programmes that arent supposed to be running

Been there pal, done all that..... Spent 8 days on it now - and it ain't as simple as what you said.
The hi jack programme that installed itself is probably one of the toughest to remove and you have to go through each line of code on the reg files, scan and or remove them. YOu need to do a lot of REGEDIT's (not clever if you don't know what your doing) and a load of complex shit I ain't ogt a clue about.
I did everything I was advised to by the pro's and it is still embedded in my system - only one way out of that - wipe EVERYTHING and start again
Anyway, back to topic - any one know how I find out what the onboard sound and graffix shit is so I can download the drivers and get this thing on it's way again please?

Find out the model of your board and download the drivers should be an installer etc come with it
To find out the model of your board open up the pc and look between the pci slots there should be a model number put that into google an after abit of searching you should find it
Or you could run diognostic software to find it out
good luck

Mikey - only discs I got for installation are : Win98SE software disk, a floppy Windows boot disk, and a Windows 98 SE "Microsoft Press" disk...
I thought they'd be on the "Microsoft Press disk, but apparently not

You could try putting the 98SE software disk in and get windows to search the disk for the standard .INF files to get the devices working, but it should have put these in.

Matt try typing DXDIAG into the "run" command.
Not sure if that tells you the motherboard but worth a try for sound and vision
If that don't work this EVEREST program will tell you it

in everest menu click motherboard.
the right hand side of the screen will give you all the info about the make and model of your mobo.
It should also put a link to their site where you can download all the drivers, bios updates etc etc

Still can't get audio drivers sorted
And I just tried to re-install my MMC/SM/CF etc card reader (plug in USB type) and installation said succesfull, but the extra drive location icons don't show up in "MY COMPUTER" like they should????????? USB ports appear to be working fine as the lights come on and the card reader reads the card I put into it, but I can't access any cards (or the built in flash memory) as I got no drive letter icons to click open

Got the audio drivers from a CD I found that said something about Chipset drivers, and luckily they had audio drivers so thats all cool
I did install the card reader drivers from the provided CD that came with it, but once installed it should show three extra drive locations in the "My Computer" folder but it don't
It shows that the reader is installed in "Add Remove/Programmes" tho
