iPhone: Jailbreak & OS 3.0 info
A few threads have started recently concerning the release of Apple's iPhone 3.0 firmware release tomorrow (17th), but also people have been speaking about the jailbreaking of it... or the fact they could lose all jailbreak apps from 2.2.1
I have been looking around for any information to help people out in answering the questions that have been asked and speculated over the last couple of weeks concerning the 3.0 and jailbreak.
To start with, you will lose all jailbreak apps when upgrading to OS 3.0 but with the use of aptbackup from Cydia, all those apps can be backed up (in the background) by iTunes. So i would go into Cydia now and install it before you upgrade!
** All apps will return once you have jailbroke 3.0 and installed aptbackup again and clicking restore in the app.
Ok, so Apple release the new 3.0 tomorrow (or after midnight tonight) and at 3am UK time, the Dev Team release info/demos of the new Yellowsn0w (unlocking software). Now if that info is being released, the jailbreak must be too.
For information regarding upgrading from 2.2.1 to 3.0, please see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Important
You must restore your jailbroken 2.2.1 to standard 2.2.1 using iTunes
Once you have upgraded to iTunes 8.2 you cannot rejailbreak 2.2.1!!!

But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.
Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

How its always worked before is download the latest firmware to your machine, do shift-upgrade in itunes, upgrade to latest firmware, then run quickpwn or whatever and point it to the firmware you downloaded.
Looks like this will be no different.
Just download their latest util shortly after apple release the 3.0 software

Why put the standard firmware back on?
You have to upgrade to the latest (original) 3.0 firmware 1st to do anything anyway?
What time will it be released here? Its across the pond, so earliest 5am?

As far as I'm aware, it's midnight tonight. The quote above saying Tuesday evening is from the states, and that works out at 3am our time... But that's for yellowsn0w, not 3.0. 3.0 is downloadable on the 17th... After midnight is the 17th.
There has been no mention of an exact time quickpwn 3.0 is to be released, but once the Dev Team have tested it on Apples 3.0 and all is cool, then it will be released. They don't want to release it early just incase.
I reckon by tomorrow night, the world will be deciding whether to have the apple or the pineapple boot screen

As for jailbreaking 2.2.1 on iTunes 8.2, you can't. Simply because apple changed something when 8.2 was made. If you aren't happy with 3.0 and want to revert back to a JB'd 2.2.1, you'll have to download and install the previous iTunes.
iTunes 8.2 is designed around 3.0 more than 2.2.1 although 2.2.1 (non-JB) can and will still sync.

I'm now running on stock 3.0, not really that exciting tbh.
Goto wait till friday for Ultrasn0w and JB
You will be able to JB 3.0 using itunes 8.2 when the dev team release the new version of pwnage tool, hopefully friday.
The 3.0 gm ipsw that was released at the wwdc has been out and about on torrents for the last week, seems to match whats available from the apple update servers this morning.

If you apply our jailbreak when it comes out, you can install ultrasn0w anytime after that. You obviously won’t have cell service in the meantime, though.
This may in fact be directly applicable to the iPhone 3GS if it can be jailbroken, because it runs the same baseband version. Whether or not it can be jailbroken is a big question right now!

Since when has anyone from o2 ever known what they are talking about tho
Gizmodo have released info to say that the restore software has hit the apple servers, but they are yet to upload it to iTunes.... Its a waiting game.
When I rang O2 in the UK earlier the man said the update was probably going to be online at 6pm (BST), 5pm (GMT)!

ok, that explains it then
So rumours are now saying that Apple wont release until the whole world is on Wednesday... according to here everywhere is, apart from Honolulu, which still has a couple of hours to go. Also rumoured is that Apple will wait till a more reasonable time to allow for a more comfortable server useage time as to not overload the servers too hard with billions of downloads at one time!
People are also now claiming that Apple watched the Dev Team Ultrasn0w footage and are holding back the software until they can find the hole used for ultrasn0w's injection... although Jonzy's Developer issue may rule that out!
Whatever tho, its the 17th till midnight tonight, so yup... still a waiting game. I might even wait now till Dev Team releases the JB for it on Friday.

Top tip on the aptbackup app - was just about to go into cydia to jot all of mine down (which I'll do anyway just to to be sure) but this should save a load of hassle
Funny that all 3.0 will give us is what should have been there with 1.0 but at least we're getting em at last

Heres a link: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw
If you do upgrade to this, do it at your own risk ok, IM NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY.
Its the Gold Master used at the WWDC'09.

exactly what i was going to say. Someone set off a 'panic' on one of the forums saying that their itunes said 18th. He was from Singapore. Their time scale is different.
Theregister got hold of this and made a story on it.... no biggy.

I have already posted links to the official WWDC'09 software... all looks legit, although again - I aint taking responsibility for any mess ups!
Ok, so here we go... ready.....
HongKong '3' users were text from '3' to say that the update will occur at 1am their time, that figured against UK time is 6pm (as stated earlier) also tallies up with California time stated too.
Workers from o2 have received an email from Apple (or whoever) to say that the update will be ready at 6pm today....
... check the o2 site out: http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/index.html
Clearly states "Available this evening"
I think the puzzle is coming together - slowly!
