A few threads have started recently concerning the release of Apple's iPhone 3.0 firmware release tomorrow (17th), but also people have been speaking about the jailbreaking of it... or the fact they could lose all jailbreak apps from 2.2.1
I have been looking around for any information to help people out in answering the questions that have been asked and speculated over the last couple of weeks concerning the 3.0 and jailbreak.
To start with,
you will lose all jailbreak apps when upgrading to OS 3.0 but with the use of
aptbackup from Cydia, all those apps can be backed up (in the background) by iTunes. So i would go into Cydia now and install it
before you upgrade!
** All apps will return once you have jailbroke 3.0 and installed aptbackup again and clicking restore in the app.
Ok, so Apple release the new 3.0 tomorrow (or after midnight tonight) and at 3am UK time, the Dev Team release info/demos of the new Yellowsn0w (unlocking software). Now if that info is being released, the jailbreak must be too.

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

Important
You must restore your jailbroken 2.2.1 to standard 2.2.1 using iTunes
Once you have upgraded to iTunes 8.2 you
cannot rejailbreak 2.2.1!!!
