compaq laptop

i have a compaq nx7010 that was being thrown out at work so i thought i would take it home and have look at it but i cant get it to boot past the first screen any ideas?

Stick a Windows disc in it and install a fresh version of XP

Thats true. Ubuntu is easily burned to a CD-R and will boot any computer....
