Default laptop speed probs.

My lap top is about two years old has always been pretty quick.

Over the last few months is slows down quite a bit especially on intial start up.

Opening first page takes 10 seconds or more sometimes then after that its a few seconds a page which is ok.
Now and again it will really slow down like its doing something but I havent asked it to??

Its not just on the net either as sometimes i can go into my documents and flick between pics really quickly and at other times it takes forever like its thinking about what to to.

I have ran CCleaner and other spyware type programs, done a disk cleanup and ran a AVG virus checker but they dont detect anythin gout of the ordinary.

any ideas folks??

How much free space on the HDD is there? If it's rammed full then it will take longer to do stuff as the RAM will be working overtime (no virtual ram space left on HDD allocation) and laptopdrives are generally quite slow (5400rpm as opposed to 7200 desktop drives)

Guy at work brought me his lappy to look at, complaining it was slow - turns out there was only 645mb of free space on his 40gb HDD I said no wonder and sent him to PC world to get an external drive to shift data onto

go task manager and then click the processes tab. Go through every one, google the name of each one and see if its necessary, unecessary or a virus. If its a legit program trace whats causing the bacground program to run, and fix it ( reg edit would be useful, but be careful). If there are virus file running slowing your pc down, try deleting each physical file. If it tells you no, delete them in safe mode. There is always something you can get rid of

Says CPU usage is only 30% tops.
PF usage 373MB? whats this?

there seem to be alot of processes in the table most have 00 in the CPU colum, does this mean they aint taking up processor speed? it does say how much mem the take up tho.

I fixed a mates laptop last week with similar problems and I find in general that when they behave like this (overall slowness / speed issues), the best thing to do is to format it and reinstall Windows (XP).

You can either reinstall it along side your current install (keeping all your current data) or do a complete format and wipe the lot.

You will need your original XP cd for this though.

cheers
Rich

I have ended some of the tings in task manager and its helped but again sometimes it cant change pages fast enough(its almost instant) and other times it takes ten seconds.
