Default Which graphics card

Had my new pc up and running for a couple of weeks now, (2.4 quad core, 2gb 800mhz ocz memory, asus sli board), and i need to sort a new graphics card.

Decided its guna be an Nvidia, as i've got an SLI board, and i plan to purchase another matching card at some point in the future.

Narrowed it down to an 8800 series card, but after that im stuck.

8800 GT 512mb - £172 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136561
8800 GTS 512mb - £223 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138416
8800 GTS 640mb - £249 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135732
8800 GTX 768mb - £285 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130449

Prices i've just used as an example on ebuyer, i'll shop around once i have decided on a card.

Not bothered if its a single or double slot, my pc will be fine with either.

I was pretty much decided on the GT, but the GTS512 really is'nt much more money, seems to beat it in all the reviews, runs cooler and uses less power.

Or do i just spend a little more, and go for the GTX which seems to be the daddy at the moment.

What are other people's thoughts on this?

Thanks

Peter

gt - 512mb

ur not gettin much more for your money on the more expensive cards, especially going SLI the cost difference of 50quid x2 is gonna give you 1fpss moree if that lol

Id have said the same as above, get the GT 512MB, they are great apparently and better performace than a GTS of any kind, plus whenever you get a second one you'll be laughing(if you even need it)
I take it you have 22"+ screen? 2 8800GT's wouldnt be needed for a 20" really.
Also go for either EVGA,XFX or BFG, in order of preference

Only got a Samsung SyncMaster 913N 19" at the moment, looking at getting a 22" or a 24" over the next few months though,

So i'd like a card that can power a 24" at 1900 by 1200 with no probs.

I quite like the look of the dual slot cards though as they have better cooling, and where my pc is in the room (not really got much choice on where i put it) has'nt got great air flow.

Also, as i dont wana get into spending loads on upgrading on my all the time like some of my mates, i just wana buy the best i can now and have it last me another 3 years or so like my old one.

Hmmmmm, decisions decisions

Right, you say your room doesnt have the best airflow yeah? the GTX kicks out LOADS of heat( i mean you couldnt touch it, its that hot) plus you will need a very good PSU for that.
At the moment you have a 19", a 8800GT 512mb will play any new game on or near to max settings on that size screen, then when you get your bigger screen just buy another 8800GT?

I think thats your best bet, as the GT's use less power and they wont kick out as much heat either.

Also 2 GT 512's will be around the same performance if not better than a single GTX, and you wouldnt want two GTX's, your room will be like a sauna

Looking at the reviews though, the new 8800 GTS 512mb runs cooler and uses less power and out performs the 8800 GT.

And im looking at buying a 22/24" screen with my Jan pay (pc in Nov, graphics card Dec, new TFT in Jan), so i want a card that will power a screen at 1920 * 1200 straight away.

Im still no closer to deciding

Yeah it out performs the GT, fair enough not by a huge amount, but its deff a better performing card, and its dual slot ao makes less noise, uses less power and runs cooler.

We all decided on me ordering an 8800 GTS 512 (the new G92)?

Those are the two brands i'd go for (BFG and point of view, for a graphics card, herd bad things about EVGA, the cards are ok but the customer service is poor, as their service centre is in germany lol

theres no difference in the cards, theyre all built with the same componants etc the difference in price is warrenty and game bundles with it. so have a look at the type of warrenty offered with the cards and what the reviews say about them, and go from there.

although BFG cards always seem to be more expensive then any other of the rival brands

The top 520w one is good but if you can afford it id get the 620w, especially if your upgrading to a 8800.

700w isnt needed unless you have like 2 8800's, quad core processor with 10 fans running etc.

Also with PSU's its better to get a 520w decent brand than a 1000w shitty no name brand that nobody has ever heard of

I have a BFG8800GTX, really good card no problems running any games on full settings at the moment, its very long though and I had to lose a fan slot from the front of my case to get it to fit in (antec900)
I run it off a 720W Enermax easily and it should cope with them in SLi in the future I guess

yeah it will

And did you really need to lose the middle fan?i have the same case and i installed my mates GTS which is about the same length and it went straight in? there is a piece of plastic there which can hold another optional fan, that can come straight out but you dont lose any fans that are preinstalled

Finally its ordered

I decided on an 8800 GTS 512mb, got a Gainwood one from Ebuyer for 215quid, i'm expecting delivery on Friday, then i'll mostly be playing call of duty 4

I was tempted by a 8800 GTX 768mb card from ebuyer as they have the OEM card (comes without drivers CD / cables / manual etc etc) for only £285

You have to draw the line somewhere though i guess.
