[I'm not a computer expert in the slightest so please use simple language and as few acronyms as possible ]

I currently have a fairly good Desktop PC at home. It's running on a normal BT Broadband wotsit at the moment but I want to go wireless for the imminent arrival of a decent laptop [for bedroom porn].

I have been recommended THIS router.

I was told I should be able to access files on my desktop from the laptop with this? Is this true?

Does this mean I will be able to print/scan on the printer currently hooked up to the Desktop without plugging in wires, or is there a way of doing that wirelessly anyway? [it's an HP 2410 all-in-one thing if it makes any difference]

ALSO I have a desktop at work [my one from a few years ago, it's shite but I use it for updating my website and photos of cars etc]. I plan to get the same router for there as well...

Is there anyway I could then access information from THAT desktop from my home?

Any suggestions/better routers?

I realise this may all be common sense to some but I'd like to know what exactly I'll need before being "sold" something I don't need by the 16 year old kids [that know more than me ] in Pissy World

Pretty much yes to all of that, but double check with PC world that the router is OK for BT - they will know, I'm not sure.

There are 2 types, one that you connect to a phone line and do away with the broadband bit you already have, and one that you keep the bit you've got and connect the two with a network cable. As I said, not sure what you need for BT.

Printing - if you have all of the software and files that you want to print stored on the laptop you would 'share' the printer on the desktop.

Or, if all of the stuff is on the desktop, you can use a program that you control it from the laptop. You logon to it, and the screen/mouse from your desktop shows up on your laptop. Something like realVNC...

However, you'll have to go through a bit of once only setup stuff to be able to do all of this, so I would think real hard about finding someone good with PC's that will come an do it for you.

I'm not sure that router will work for adsl lines (bt), as i think bt have to have a combined modem/router check onm the bt website they should have a list of recomended modem routers.

depending on how you have your system set up theresa few ways you can do file sharing, some routers will allow you to plug the printer directly into it so anyone on that network can log in at anytime and print off it.

or you can set one of the computers you intend to use on the network as a print server, so you'd have the printer connected to this computer and it would have to switched on if anyone one ur netwrok wants to print.

for doing file sharing accross the internet your better off looking into setting up something with remote desktop, this will let you access your computer from anywhere on the web although it has to be connected to the internet and be switched on for you to access it.
