Default *updated* problem solved...

I've just had to do a fresh install of XP on a new hard drive on my main PC but now it won't connect to my router no matter what I seem to do.

Its a Belkin wireless G router/modem, this PC is running wireless through it no problems, and the XBOX and 360 are also running through it with no problems either

I've changed the network card settings to point at the router (IP address, subnet mask) and the DNS addresses for the internet but when I put the router address into the explorer address bar it just won't look at it

The router has got the light on it saying that the PC is connected and everything worked fine before the old hard drive gave up

I'm really losing my patience with this, anyone got any suggestions?

when you freshly install XP, the router will not be recognized by its previous settings. You have to do a hard reset (lil button on the back that you push in with a pen normally) then setup as if it was like new. Then it should be OK

Unless you have to specifiy dns settings, then everything should be fine, if you have to specify such information, then you will need to RTM about accessing your router to input the information, obviously this can't be done wirelessly unless you remember the encryption key.

I have a netgear router and for some reason, my network could not be deteceted. So i did a master reset and connected the router as a fresh device and took it again from there. all worked then.

what's probably happening, I'm guessing that the computer light is on but the router is waiting for a response from the pc or the other way round. if you do a fresh install of the router than it should be fine but yeah do all the updates for windows first and have a look to see if there is any new firmware (drivers) for your router then take it from there. a hard reset normally works in nearly every situation

Just finished the install of service pack 2 and the PC won't connect to the net even with the modem

The light saying the router is connected to the PC is on but its constantly flickering on both the ethernet port and the router, it never did this before so my guess is the on-board ethernet port is fooked

I know the router is working absolutely perfectly as I just plugged it into this PC and connected to it straight away, same router port and cable so its defo something with the PC

I've run out of ideas now

check the static IP of the modem if it is constantly 0.0.0.0 it has been de-registered and needs to be reacticated at the ISP end which means phoning up.

does the cable light illuminate on the modem i.e. the data cable light.

I have three lights on my modem (telewest) POWER, PC, DATA, CABLE.

The cable light is always on. This verifies the modem is ready for transmission through the cable.

This is very strange now, got home this morning and tried to connect to it and got onto the router set up page!

Then it wouldn't let me do anything more and occasionally let me do a search on MSN but nothing else...

This is all a bit weird now

No mate MAC address filtering is definitely off, although I may set it up now I know what I'm doing lol

bit of an update, I realised in my haste to get the PC up and running I didn't download any virus software so my PC was a playground for all sorts of shit that was flying about, one being the Agobot virus

Agobot is an IRC-controlled backdoor with network spreading capabilities

that explained why my connection was constantly transferring data. The worrying part was when I tried to get into the router settings page via the 192.xxxxx etc address it said another PC was already using that page, and as I only had one PC working at the time my guess was someone else trying to hack it... so I pulled the plug lol

Anyways I've just checked and the router can now see the PC but the PC still won't see the router. Everytime I try and open the router settings it tells me it can't open the search page (but I don't want to search lol)

Any suggestions?

if you can't go to the router using 192.168.1.1 try using something like

www.routerlogin.net

it's ultimately the same thing. If it cannot connect then the router is set up wrong/ not properly setup. If the worst comes, going to have to be possibly a fresh win XP install as some viruses could have buggered the whole thing up. I normally install all antivirus and antispyware on before I connect to the Internet. I also get the updates for them from the laptop and save themm onto a CD and update them manually before I connect to the net after a reformat since they are very outdated when freshly installing.

Have you got an ethernet port on your PC? Try doing it through that. Weird as it may seem sometimes it works through ethernet and not through USB and vice versa

had a little play with the PC this morning and after I did a restart 3 programs popped up on the windows firewall list that I didn't recognise so I did a bit of digging. 2 of them didn't even exist on a google search so they got deleted straight away and the other was a bit more sinister.

It had called itself Isass.exe, but the I looks like an l in the windows font so at a first glance it looks like the windows system file lsass.exe.

After deleting this I could connect to the net via my router so I updated the virus software and it found a total of 7 viruses on the PC!! A quick clean up and all is well now

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help
