Okay.

Firstly you need to buy and address and some space. I actually followed a link from one of passionfords adds at the bottom.

25 squid for some space and a name and www.l33byt.co.uk is now mine!!!

The what you need to do is design a site.
Programs such as microsoft word/powerpoint will make you a basic site. Keep it simple and dont make it too complicated otherwise it will take ages to load.

If you are looking for something better Dreamweaver or Frontpage should be looked at.

Once your done save your work as a webpage. For a page to work the 1st page MUST be called index.htm

You then upload to your webspace via FTP. Basically a program which logs onto your space and transfers the files into it.

A quick run down.

To host the domain you have bought on your own computer you will need to have a fixed IP address from your ISP. Plus you will need a fast Internet connection and leave your computer on of course.

TBH you may as well host with one of the many cheap hosting company’s for around Ł60 a year. You will get about 50 meg space for a basic package which is loads for a standard website.

If you want any help let me know

If you want me to design a site for you mate I will do you a real good deal as you have helped me out before

Can also help you out with all your questions and sort it all for you if you like..

If you want to have a go yourself however you need to sign up with someone like www.namesco.co.uk they provide you 60meg on a server in a data centre somewhere, don’t matter where. That’s all you need for your site, then when they give you your account details you logon and setup the forwarding from you newly purchased domain so it points to your namesco server.

Once that’s done you can upload your website to the space on the server and bingo its up and running!!

50 meg is more than enough for the average site, you will only run into problems with video and lots and lots of pictures. Text takes up more or less nothing at all.

it's a good site mate
nice and simple to navigate and all the options are there for you to do what you need to do

and thanks for the offers of making sites guys, but i'm stumped on what i want to do with it to be honest i just wanted a website that i could say was mine, and havent thought about what to do after that

the kanagroo one has a point, graceland's site is about his car, everyone i know who has websites does stuff with them because they have a job or whatever and they want to show people what theyv'e done

me, i'm just me and now i think i'm biting off more than i can chew or else i'm going to end up with a website with a picture of me on it and nothing else.........

it's like winning the lottery and then not doing anything with the money

That Kangaroos Site was easy, done entirely in Photoshop (gives a smoother finish and you can do more with it) then the pictures just placed in a table on the page... updating is easy just open up photoshop, change stuff and save over the old file.....

It depends, what / who are you making it for? if its just for yourself and to display info about you / your cars then you are in the perfect situation because you can fanny about with it all you like until you are happy, without anyone demanding requirements

If you want it to sell stuff on then that isnt as bad as it sounds you can buy packages pretty cheap for checkouts and that kind of thing

If you are worried about how to link them up you can always send the pages to me once you have done them and I will help you create the navigation side of things

Who did you purchase the domain name through? You should have some basic admin functions to simply forward the name to your webspace.

Who is your ISP - internet service provider - as most come with some basic webspace, where you could upload your web page to, and then just point your domain name at that.

Wouldn't recommend running a web site from your own PC for a few reasons, main being your knowledge is limited in this area and most home ISP services don't allow it. Your PC would need to be on 24/7 and you'd need to be running a webserver - which would need configuring etc. plus you'd have to take of security issues etc. as you'd be more open to being hacked etc. than if using a hosting service or your ISP web space.
