Printing labels directly onto CD/DVD's?
As in, not printing on to adhesive labels, but actually priting DIRECTLY on the disc surface.....
How does this work, what do you need, does it affect the disc playing (as adhesive lables have affected discs I have done) and how much?
Can you get full colour? Can you also do pictures and not just text?

My new pc i got a few weeks ago has a philips dvd rewriter drive with something called "lightscribe" technology, it does exactly the thing you described i havent actually tried it yet though

I had seen that, which is what prompted me to make this thread. Thing with that is it only does black "etching" and only works with specific LightScribe drives and only etches specific LightScribe CD's and DVD's....
I want to be able to put a proper label on the disc, in full colour, kinda like you get when you buy a CD or DVD these days - like a pitcure disc sort of thing;
Like that for example....
I know there are programmes and printers available for sticky/adhesive lables, but I have used them before and had problems with the discs in players, so I don't like em.... But I know you can buy CD-R's and DVD-R's with completely blank, white faces, so wondering if there was a driver or device that could "laser print" directly onto the CD/DVD face in full colour etc.....

"backed up!"
lightscribe and labelflash is pretty useless i been told
takes about half hour per disc, you need special discs and it just gives you a dull black image.
I'm still considering it though, the drive isn't much more than an "ordinary" rw so it won't harm having it there!

check out that review someone did.

Just get an Epson printer that prints on discs, like a R320 buy full face printable discs in either silver or white. The software comes with the printer its called epson print cd, I chose epson because of the cheap cartridge prices, about Ł1.50 each cartridge, this soon makes a lexmark or hp seem expensive to run. Only problem is you will have to back up your backups onto the correct discs in order to do them. Hope this helps.

Daz - thanks, that 320 sounds like it could do what I want, but Epsons site does say "print directly to CD-R/DVD-R with compatible discs" but doesn't tell you WHAT discs..... I don't really wanna get stuck into having to buy specialist discs in the future.....

Cheers pal I have seen white CD-R's (got a couple kicking round here somewhere)
Just pondering what to do, as ideally I need a new printer anyway, and I fancy a laser ket one as my ink jet just ain't cutting it anymore for hi res graphic printing...

The Canon Pixma range of printers do double sided printing, edge to edge and CD and DVD printing.. there are also wireless models available.
The quality of these printers are amazing and great value for money... the middle of the road and higher specification models use seperate ink tanks for each colour which saves on ink as you only replace what you use unlike certain other printers that have a single colour cartridge of all colours.
Have a good look at these printers they are really really good... I own a Pixma IP5000 which although being an older model is amazing quality and very good on running costs.
Check them out at the following URL :-- damn I feel like a salesman

Got a lightscrive drive a few weeks bacvk, its awesome, eyah its only monochrome, but I am very impressed, not bothered about the time it takes to do as I rarely burn disks anyway, but when I do, they look sweet, much better than any stuck on label!

Hi there,
Just a quick suggestion but have you looked at all at the lightscribe software? I am not quite sure what options they have for printing but have heard they are quite good so may be worth having a look.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I bought a wee HP inkjet printer about the time this thread was born, and it has a caddy for CDs and DVDs to allow you to print onto the discs with printable faces. If you buy a 50 disc spindle there's very little in it price-wise versus normal discs.
