Im usin NERO to try to burn CDs but recently it doesnt recognise that there is a CD in the tray.

I have tried 3 different brands of CDR in it and no luck at all. Previously it has burned all these brands without a problem.

I assumed the CD drive was not working properly, but it seems to play CDs, DVDs etc without any issue, just refuses to burn them......anyone got any ideas?

 

What happens when you try and burn the disc ? Once you've dragged all the file's across and then click burn, check all the settings and spped's etc, what happens ?

 

If u click Recorder then Disc Info, u can get information on what the drive is seeing/reading. Chances are the drive is starting to break down lasers don't last for ever they have a specified life time. Writeable media is harder to recognise than Pre-recorded DVD's CD's etc.

 

Safechav is right..... The first things that usually fail on CD drives is the recognition of blank or recordable media. Blank discs are usually firs to fail, next will be the ability to read CD-RW discs that have media or data on them, then CD-R's that have media or data on them.

This also applies to domestic CD players also - my hifi sometimes completely refuses to recognise albums I have burned to CD-R - it just refuses to accept a disc is in the drive! Then other times it will work... It won't detect CD-RW discs whatsoever tho.....

Best thing to do is get hold of another drive, borrow one if you can and slot it in place of yours, and try again. If it works you know it is your CD drive. Not knowing what drive you have I can't specify on price, but if you just need a simple CD-RW drive, LITE-ON do good, quick drives that are inexpensive, and even Dual Layer DVD-RW drives can be had brand new for less than £40 these days!

 

You can pick up DVD DL writers for as little as about £16 just to update on that, but u will get a very nice Pioneer for £30 in white black or silver.

Its actually not worth buying anything less than a DVD writer anymore. CD writers are almost as expensive.

And i know the feeling Thrush, my Sony seperate CD player has been showing signs of this for a while now, it was never approved for reading CD-R's, i bought it about 6 years ago, but it always used to read whatever i put in it but now it frequsntly loses its track when reading the TOC and when searching to tracks. bummer! Still reads pre-recorded discs perfectly though.
