Default Capri Laser 2.0 zetec UPDATE 7/4/2008

Right its my first post here, ive read the forums for a while but not posted til tonight, heres my current car. Paid 700 for it

I wouldnt really call it a restoration, just a tidyup.

Heres how I bought it.

Already had the 2.0 zetec in it, previous conversion done by a friend, and now the headgasket had gone. So sod it all just swap the engine, 76k with FSH, sweet as. Also tidied up the bay a little while it was being done, hidden some wiring etc but it could still be better.

Before

Engine coming out

New engine in, IGNORE the duck tape and the broken fan, major mishap but have a new intake pipe to be fitted, need new map and new fan is in the post. Basically before taking the engine out a coolant pipe blew from the pressurisation, blew in my face to be exact, and I broke a ferw things in the reaction.

A couple more things I did were the black grille, fitted some escy gti wheels (these needed spacers, at least 30mm so I ended up selling them cause I didnt wanna spoil the handling (what little handling problems it has anyway) with huge spacers).

Bumper off in that pic.

Fitted some RST recaros I had lying round, just needed to drill 2 holes in the capri subframes to fit them, very easy

Just bought some 280 special wheels, the 13" ones, and am spraying them satin black. Only done one so far so heres the pics.

Just getting rid of the rust slowly, surprisingly the car is very solid underneath, its just rear arches, and one sill has a little rust so Im doing it with filler. Sadly no pics of rust repairs.

New bumpers next and a fuel tank with a swirl pot from a 2.8i. Slowly going through the shoppinglist for the turbo conversion too, almost there Just need turbo, oil cooler and a couple of other small things.

Not much of an update but just a couple pics, also overcame a cooling sytem problem. Reservoir used to drink all the coolant, then the higher engine speed, the higher the coolant level would rise

Turns out it had a mondeo water pump on (bloody midwest gave me the mondeo 1.6 one instead of the escort 1.6 one like i asked for, anyway got the escort one and fitted it, problem solved Check the pictures to see the difference between pumps.

Notice that the veins are mirror images of eachother, and point in the opposite direction.

And now pictures of the dodgy paint

Next week, 2.8i brake and suspension conversion on the front, and a 2.8i fuel tank and pump. Possibly a trip to powerflow too

God terrible paint on the sill

how well does your cooling cope?

As you really want to have the rad sealed off completely so no air can escape round it. Air will take the easiest route so any gaps round the rad will mean your flow through it will be majorly reduced.

Im waiting on an oil feed and breather then its on.

and i am waiting on this in the post.

originally the car was running on standard zetec management, coped ok on low boost but had to use a fuel additive to stop it pinking, originally i was gonna do the same but its looking like megasquirt now. using a 1.8 cast zetec manifold with a modofied fuel rail for the cos injectors

niice project, ive been lookin for a thread of yours
what was the ZETEC conversion like??
what gearbox did you use??
how much would you recon a conversion (including gearbox) would be to do... (2.0-2.0).
spacers on the rear wheels dont ruin the handling, its just the front thats a pain in the arse with spacers!!

Its using the standard 1.6 5 speed gearbox at the minute, bolted up fine, had to make a bracket to fit the starter motor and a mix and match of cluthc parts, capri friction plate with zetec pressure plate.

I have no idea about the loom, but ive been told by many people that its pretty easy to wire up.

to fit the thermostat the bulkhead had to be knocked back a bit

engine mounts look simple enough.

I know a little about the conversion but i didnt do it.

Dunno what i want for the wheels tbh, ill get pics of them probably monday and if youre interested you can make me an offer.

well heres the 2.8i fuel tank, came across a problem.

this pipe that runs across the top of the tank, its not the fuel out to the pump, its not the fuel return, and its not the overflow. It just comes out one side of the tank, over the top and to the other side. And its a little worse for wear and i snapped it

Is it needed? ie can i block it both ends and away with it? or does it need to be repaired, if so how will i go about it?

paintd it a little anyay, dont care how bad it is i just slapped the hammerite on to cover it from rust, cause its never gonna be seen again.

Why not make a thread up?

And i did have a legal one on the front I SWEAR until the postman walked past and ripped it off !!

yours looks good are you doign a rebuild discodenkelly?

Ive got my turbo now, just doing a little modification (bodging) to the exhaust manifold, need one or 2 more t peices, modded sump and oil breather and wahey here we go on the build!!

Gonna look for a cossie intercooler, not sure which one it is now, but its long, thin and black . gonna put it upfront at the pottom of the front panel with the pipework coming under the radiator.

Only minor update, have hidden a lot more wiring now, but gonna wait til i have management and put as much inside the car as i can. For now ive just tidied up the bay a little, and gonna get a smaller expansion tank over the back of the bay, poss a capri one but cant remember if the caps vent pressure, dont think they do though. The bay looks so much better without that bottle, much less cramped.

I am thinking of doing a twin exhaust, but people will think its a v6, or even a v8 but it isnt, and i dont want epople thinking its something its not haha.

Havent hidden the wiring at the back of the bay yet though.

Yeah mine's a full on resto. It has been stood over 5 years outside before I bought it. Its not bad though, wings and floor pans are the worst. Rear spring hangers need a bit of attention. Engine will get a full rebuild then I need to find an interior cos there was some mice living in it and there wasn't much to rip out when I emptied it.
The intercooler you're describing sounds like a saff 4x4 one. Should be loads out there cos everyone seems to buy RS500 style ones. I know it did when I had mine.
Gonna start on mine again next month and get the shell ready for paint. I don't get much free time cos I'm a wagon driver and am away all week

the capri's cap for the radiator stores pressure and vents it when its too high n then just sucks the excess back when its de-pressurised, ive been running a nissan almera expansion tank for the rad for a while now, vented no problems, and fits snugly behind the drives side headlights next to the rad

Great conversion mate and nice to see someone doing something a bit different with a Capri !!!

I have 2 Capri's currently undergoing resto's and been thinking about a 24v Cossie conversion on my 2.8i as a relatively straight forward swap and 200 bhp in standard trim !!!!

Hi mate. I've got a escort cos intercooler in pretty much perfect condition. Bought it and was gonna use it in a conversion but didn't bother in the end. Couple of pics, it's actually black, just a bit dusty in pics.

Let me know if your interested. Mark

pm sent

also been thinking, gonna leave the n/a engine in, get a spare engine and do a properjob

uprated conrod, crank and headbolts, pistons (calibra most likeley), new conrod and crank bearings, drill oil return into the block and fit rst oil feed. breather must be drilled into the block, frs headgasket, and prob some other things when i think of them FRST management, and if anyone has any details please pm me.

as for body and mech wise, 2.8i front suspension, rear suspension, lsd and brakes. change of gearbox, most likeley a 2.0 one but maybe a 2.8 one if it will fit. Gonna do the suspension as soon as i get paid

If your gonna turbo a capri...you've gotta keep an eye on your prop, or this can happen:

Thats my mate holding the rear half of his T4 turbo'd capri's propshaft as we sat stranded on the N38, 40km away from leman. Went with a nice bang as well

its gotta be better than the 1.6 box on it at the minute though

was thinking 4 speed if i was staying n/a but with turbo in the future i rather pick something now, need a box anyway as 2nd is crunching.

ouch at that prop

bet that was running immense power though, im only after 200bhp, only

lol u can have my 5 speed box works fine bar changing into second, if u do it too fast it crunches... darn!
they used to use the 4 speed box on the 2.8 when t'old capri's used to race, but tbh on the road, wont be too economical haha.
