Been wanting to take some pics of my car on Winnats pass (derbyshire) for a while. But due to the fact the road is basically single track and the amount of traffic that uses the road I've struggled. Step in my dad lol
The place looks so much more impressive when you drive through it
The view from the bottom. You drop from the top of the hill to the bottom in about 1/4 of mile. Think we'll try again in the summer when the sun gets a bit higher, and its not is so bloody slippy

In laymans (/laywomans ) terms its just capturing the stars as they move across the sky at night. As the earth spins they appear to move anyway. By taking a shit load of pictures and stacking them on top of each other you get the effect. Its better if you face true north as the north star doesnt appear to move so all the other stars circle around that. This was facing south as north is my nearest town and the light pollution gets out of hand and you cant pick out any detail in the stars.

Went out in to town to some night shots, need a tripod, and to learn a bit more some havent come out to well but here they are:
Two slightly different shots lol, quiet like the first one, even if it is a little over exposed ( that the right word?)
Again 2 different shots of the same place:
These 2 I couldnt get the right picture, was to far on either end of the scale lol:

Right my first post on this topic after buying a Canon EOS1000D a couple of weeks ago this is my best effort so far, still getting my head around all the setting.
This was taken with my 70 - 300 lens handheld as left the tripod in the car, what you think? The duck was just a poser

I've been a bit preoccupied lately with breaking my Evo and a few other things, definitely about time i pulled my finger out and got some new photos taken... especially since i bought myself a new lens... a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 lens
StephenC - Really like that star trail shot, been looking at those on flickr lately, i'll get round to trying one one day.
Graham88 - Great panning shots
danja - the robin shot is very good but the one of the sea is fantastic
M4tty - not bad for a start... you would definitely notice a vast improvement if you had a tripod, a worthy investment
pete-rsi - nice and central considering it was feehand from distance... is the duck standing on something just below the surface of the water?
olic1 - nice Ka, it looks spot on sitting on those cossie wheels

You'll love the 10-20 ben, when I got mine I dont think it came off the camera for about 6 months! We'll expect some comedy portrait shots from you then as the distortion it gives when you take close ups make people look so weird

Just been at Focus on imaging today, bought a memory card there and i've taken shots with a Nikon D700/D3/D3x & Canon 5Dmk2 (and a couple of short vids) Definately worth going to if you've an interest in photography, loads of good stands, very business orientated to and even got to have a play with a Hasselblad h3d body (very nice!)
Took loads of high ISO shots on all camera's:
Shots taken today, i've more with higher ISO's but i need to resize them as they're too big for flickR to upload.
D3 iso 200 24-70 f2.8:
D3 iso 800 50mm f1.4G:
D3 iso 3200 24-70 f2.8:
D3 iso 6400 24-70 f2.8:
And...
Canon 5Dmk2 iso 800 85mm f1.2:
Canon 5Dmk2 iso 3200 85mm f1.2:
Got a couple of vids from the 5Dmk2 also but not sure if i'll get them small enough to upload! Also got RAW files from a D3x that my software can't recognise! I also go t a play with a 600mm Canon telephoto.
Had a great time, i was really impressed with the 5Dmk2, the video was superb and the high ISO performance was not far from the Nikons. i have to ask you Canon users though, what do you truly think of the ergonomics? I found it quite fiddly to change the iso/white balance. I was using my index finger to press the button and then scrolling the wheel with my second finger.
When i've resized more of the files i'll add them. Please don't judge teh composition here, it's purely for ISO performance.
Nice shots stephenC, like the camper van.
Red: you'll love the 10-20, i used it for a job last year and it gives great results. Just be sure to check it's a sharp one as people have reported soft versions from sigma in the past.
Matt.

For Sale..Apply within.
Looking through this thread inspired the other half to get a Nikon D40 just for us to use on our "big" holiday this year...So far we're mega impressed with the auto settings...has anyone got any beginners tips at all?

Just keep using it, practice makes perfect and all that, keep trying different situations to learn how to deal with them. Its not like days of old when you had to wait a day for the pics to be developed and have to pay for them, now you just keep on snapping and you'll pick loads up

To take star trail pics do you just leave the shutter open for as long as you want using the mirror lock?
And also does anyone know how to do that on the 400D as i moved house a while back and cant find the user manual.
thanks.
