transit speed limiter removal....
....picked up a 58 plate mid sized 115/350 transit today. to my shock and horror its limited to 62mph.
how do i derestrict/remove said limiter? what does it look like/where is the limiter?
ive got to admit, its quicker off the mark than my 60 plate merc sprinter 313 although that does power on upto 108. allegedly.

perhaps, but id rather spend my time doing something else rather than sitting in my van doing 56mph in a 70.especially when i can clock up 1000 miles in a week.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I think there is a bit of 'red tape' involved if an authorised Ford dealer removes the speed limiter on the newer vehicles. Seem to remember something about it from a course at Daventry.
I have done some on older Transits in the past and it doesn't take long to do on IDS (15mins or so from memory)
Haven't done one on current model Transit, might take longer than the older models if pump learn etc needs doing in the process.
Quick Google found this - http://www.vantuner.co.uk/limiter-removal/

depending on what it's had done to it, sometimes it needs a reflash of the memory to remove the limiter and osmetimes you have to get a different ecu as you can't
you could always remove the speedo sensor wiring and see if that made a difference
but then you'd have no speedo and potentially no abs or traction control
i can feel your pain though, we had some vans, connects 110's that were very very quick indeed for what they were, easily able to break into 3 figures and that was essential on a european run, but the new ones are limited to 68 and when i hit that limiter first time out on the motorway i thought i'd broke it
but all our new vans are going to be fitted with limiters as it not not only lowers your fuel bills, it also lowers your insurance

Assuming the actual speed the ecu sees isnt critical for normal operation....
You can buy a little speed signal adjuster kit normally intended to recalibrate speedo's etc
You can adjust most pulsed signals up/down by 100% either way. You have to build it yourself, but even I managed that in a hour or two, and it even worked !
Ł20 or so posted from Jaycar in Aus.
It would fool the ecu into thinking the van is going slower than it is.
Go to

and part number KC5435
Although if the ecu sees the speedo signal first and the ecu drives the instrument cluster, the above unit probably wont work very well.

if it's canbus like a lot of the newer fords, i'd assume it's the whole ecu gubbins that will need changing for a "free" removal but it'll be some sort of speed sensor input which iwll affect every other paramiter of the vehicles operation
i prefered it when it was an adjustable screw on the loud pedal

Testing the future
these days with all of the complications of integrated electronics systems, it's too difficult for manufacturers to put speed limiters into the software so you'll find that it's done by simply putting a screw up through the floor so that your accelerator pedal doesn't go all the way down

kilmarnocks about 2 hours away from me but its a good starting point.
i remember when i got my first cosworth conversion done in my toyota, the garage tried to pull a fast one by screwing a block of rubber under the accelerator pedal to make sure i ran it in gently. i quickly spotted that one...

do the new transits still have clutch /flywheel assemblies made of soft cheese?
" a ticking timebomb just waiting to explode after 1500 miles...." said the ford mechanic about the previous transit. i went through 4 transits in 3 months at one point. all with about 20000 miles on them.
and no i dont drive them hard.

just got back from driving a 200+ mile run. a limiter is dangerous. at 56 on the motorway its that slow your mind starts to wander and your looking out the side window at the scenery counting sheep. at one point i was reading the paper then done the crossword.i almost went for a nap whilst i was driving. looked up and i was still pottering at 56 with many miles to go . at least at 100+ your wide awake and your mind is sharp looking for traffic police and pensioners crossing the road.
