Default fan problems

Onto my next problem! Usual issue with the fans not cutting in. First time its happened to the car in 19 years of ownership.
Hasn't been run for a long while so dug it out of the garage and let it tickover expecting the fans to kick in. The temp rose above the normal expected level but still no fans.
So, I pulled the plug on the fan switch and got 13.8 volts. (this was after it had been running for 30 mins) Tried bridging across the plug to bring the fans on, that didn't work. its a standard 2WD so I think it should be fuse 11, it doesn't say which fuse on the fuse box lid, the fuse looks a bit unhealthy but has not blown and the fusebox has no signs of excess current.
The fans spin easily by hand.

So whats gone wrong, any offer please on what to test next.

I intend to uprate the loom but want to get it working correctly first.

Many thanks.

I had the usual problem - fans would not kick in occasionally. Just fitted an up-rated loom kit & all Ok since.

Hi mate, can you give me a quick rundown of how you actually fitted it?

Cheers.

mine has never come on since i bought it 2 years ago, its on a separate switch for some reason, as I don't know anything about engines I have never bothered to find out why they don't come on on their own but would prefer them to, I had it in for the mot the other day and was stood watching them do it and they had left the car running the next thing there is steam coming out from the bonnet like a kettle boiling!

It sounds like the relay may be jammed or faulty (it's yellow) the switch isn't the problem, although an 'uprated' one will help.

This highlights why this is a bad idea, it's usually a bodge done by someone as they do not understand what they are doing, some even try and power the fans via the switch!

Basically, the fans stay on for too long, which is what causes the fuse to melt, this is caused by the vast span of the switch. Therefore, the resolution is to rewire, that way you are safe in the knowledge you have new wiring and another advantage is the the fans have an independent supply to that of the rest of the system (which is overloaded).

This along with the fuel pump wiring are two common problems.

as martin says get the fan and fuel pump wired up seperately.

Sounds like it is a relay issue as already stated

I would strongly recommend that you get it sorted asap as Summer is almost here and if you are stuck in traffic it will be boiling over very quickly. I am amazed that you have put up with it for 2 years and have not damaged your engine through over heating !

Defo get a fan rewire kit. Some of them come with a wire so that you can wire a switch inside the vehicle.
