Default 3dr cosworth front brake upgrade advice please.

The front discs on my 3dr need replacing and the callipers need re-building so im thinking i might aswell upgrade them to something slightly better that will also fill out the 17" wheels.

I've been looking at these on ebay,
The hi-spec ones are second hand so not sure how much theyre actually worth and not really heard a lot of feedback about them as i dont know anyone who has them.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1606710373...84.m1423.l2649

The other set uses focus discs and re-built BMW E38 callipers with an adaptor kit.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2208077830...84.m1423.l2649

Anyone got any opinions on either of these?
The car is only for road use and i dont want to spend a fortune on top spec brakes that are un-necessary for general road driving.
I just want some that will fill out the 17" wheels and also stop the car quite well.

If you can afford it then i'd opt for the AP Brakes, yes expensive BUT awesome stopping power, best mod i did on my 3dr, especially if you're running biggish power, or plan to. Mine's only a road car but you'd be suprised how much later and how much confidence these give you

I'm sure others will have other advice too...

AP's really are worth the investment IMO. I would rather buy some second hand AP's than new hi spec or similar

For under £500.....

Focus RS Brembo 4 pot calipers £150-250
Focus RS 324mm x 28mm discs £100
Custom brackets £75
Braided lines if you've not got them on front (use 4wd Cossie 1's) £30-35
Pads £30 onwards depending on what you want

the hispec stuff, normally they don't come with seals as they were race application stuff so that's what you've got to find out first

the second one is a nice bolt on kit so to save yourself from running around collecting all the bits, it's a winner for less than £500

I had big HiSpec calipers and they looked the part but didn't perform the part. Crap quality, fluid loss from the calipers that probably warped with heat from heavy use. I would stick to the big names - AP, Brembo for example.

I think the set with BMW brembos and focus discs is very good for money, brembos are very good quality and as they use focus discs then will be easy to change in the future,

looks very good, do most 17 inch wheels clear the brembo evo 9 calipers or do you need to choose carefully, My car is currently on stock wheels and am considering larger wheels to enable brakes to be upgraded but was hoping I could fit some 17 inch bbs split rim replicas, But due to size of those evo calipers not sure if it would clear.

I had a cheap kit a compbrake one yes they worked and were a lot better than standard but would fade out once hot. My ap's are far better there made from better materials so disperse heat better.

Focus brembos fit at a funny angle and look crap imo.

If those brackets come from caprisport then good luck.

Also look at the mt Motorsport stuff or Reyland.

Biggred do seal kits for the std caliber and they are a doddle to rebuild. I think you would be amazed what a rebuild will do, add some decent pads and then a bigger disc kit and a brake fluid change.

They are fine on my car now - the guy i bought my brakes off supplied me with a set of brakcets but they were so shite after fitting them they collapsed dropping the caliper into my freshly refurbed wheels - so had to do some research and buy proper brackets. Now they work well when the car works lol

< I Used to run that kit but in the 350mm form and as their brembos are from Porker and audi pads are a good price. I still have the kit and machined up some brackets to fit the cortina

Amen Pete , I wish I'd fitted my 6 pot AP's from the start rather than wasting money on Hi-spec. Here's mine......
