what oil for my 3dr? ? ?
I have a freshly built engine which is running cosworth racing pistons and lightned and balanced crank and rod's. It also runs a T4 turbo.
I used to run Mobil Motorsport in it before the rebuild but i have heard that its not as good as it used to be. With the increase in power i am looking for i dont want to risk it.
Thanks mark.

You must NEVER use a good oil in the engine if it is new, as it wil prevent decent bedding in, just use a mid range mineral oil, for the first 2000 miles or so, but change every 500 miles, something like castrol/duckhams, but MINERAL.
There is nothing inherantly wrong with mobil 1, it is a good oil, not the best(IMO), I would just use something a little thicker but everyone has thier own ideas.

Thank you for your reply,
The engine has now done 1500 miles the first 500 miles on cheap oil and then i changed it for more of the same and changed that at 1000 miles. Its now really over due for some good oil now but really dont know what to use in terms of make is viscosty? what about miller's heard some good things about there oils.
Thanks mark.

I used valvaline vr1 up to now and found it to be good. Holding good oil pressure when hot... Find some of the fancy oils a bit thin. Run it in on good mineral first....

I have thought about valvaline too, just a bit worried about putting the wrong stuff in and killing my new engine.
Having said that i suppose the way i drive it will kill it anyway. lol
Thanks mark.

silkolene is the oil most tuners use and recommend for the cossie,
unlike castrol, mobil 1 etc which break down around 110degs, silkolene is good for over 130degs,
i wont use any other oil in my t4 car.
i found changing from mobil 1 to pro s, halved my oil consumption, and quietened the lifters.
available from matt lewis, or opie oils, both on here as traders

im running my saff with 380 bhp on the 15/50 mobil ,and have noticed that oil consumption is a bit higher than i would have thought normal, without any blue smoke.it has the gaham good breather system, and last night i noticed that the block was quite oily.is there any maintenance on these breather systems,or could it be the crank oil seal,or is this oil so thin it finds its way out of the engine through the seals?

No oil will leak past OIL seals unless they are knackered, but will leak past "flat" seals easily.
Cossie oil gets TOO HOT, tests done at a very pretigious US place into oils, showed the ENGINE oil temps to be on AVERAGE, 30C HOTTER than the water temperature of a typical engine.
I am a firm beleiver in(stated) OIL COOLERS, air to air, not the modine ones, the oil temp on my XR4i used to hit 130/140C, without being used hard, just town work, although came down to 90/100 in constant gentle m/way stuff.
I ALWAYS where possible use VITON seals, as these are so much more suited to high temp, than a std seal, as they were made just for this high temp, but are expensive, two cam seals bought last week were £21.03p(inc vat)
