Default Dropping EFI into an MFI converted mk2 XR2

Hi there. Totally new to this, so forgive me if I make no sense at all!!

A few years ago I bought a MK2 XR2 which has an escort MFI RS turbo engine in it. I had nothing to do with the conversion at all. I only recently got it taxed mot'd and insured.

There seems to be a few problems with the engine, I have a lot of what seems to be blue smoke coming from the baileys oil breather vent pipe, which I gather is better ventilated to the atmosphere than going into the air inlet? Also when I give the car a good boot, not even for a long time, it starts to tick, sounds like from the top end. If I leave it ticking over, this ticking eventually stops.

So... I was thinking of getting a full engine rebuild as the history of the engine is unknown to me, but a full engine rebuild seems to be very expensive. Now I'm being offered an already rebuilt EFI engine, with a high spec. I don't know how hard the job is putting an MFI in a fiesta XR2 and was wondering if anyone knew the implications of now trying to drop an EFI in there?

Hope that all makes sense, it took me ages to type it out, so I hope so!

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Welcome aboard, efi shouldn't be so bad in a mk2 xr2, you could use the efi engine still retaining your mfi setup. In a ideal world you would convert to a decent efi system for better reliability, economy and probably power output.

Thanks for the relpy!

So, is it just as easy as MFI out, EFI in? Someone has mentioned to me that i would need an EFI engine loom and ecu.. This does not come with the engine. Had a look on ebay and there seems to be a couple diffrent EFI engine looms. Knowing my luck i'd probably buy the wrong one. Also, would i not need to change the air inlet? Ive read a few threads on here saying that I would need different accelerator pedals and cables. Among other things.. Thanks again for any help.

yeah you will need to change quite a few parts to convert to efi, there are a number of ways you can do it depending on what you want and budget.

Ahh ok seems a bit much work then. Another quick question.. Is it possible to swap my MFI inlet manifold onto this rebuilt CVH with the EFI inlet? It would give the rebuilt engine, then i could still use my full MFI setup. I know that the EFI setup may be the better option, but all i really need is the engine to run sweet.

Cheers!

You can get a adapter plate so the mfi inlet will work with a efi head, the plate blanks the injector cuts off in the efi head. Oddkidd creations makes them.

You could also get the rebuilt engine, use just the bottom end and put your MFI head on.

MFI inlet can only be used with MFI, EFI inlet only with EFI unless you do some very elaborate modifications.

When you'd like to go full EFI, you'll have to change nearly everything. Engine, wiring loom, ECUs etc. Throttle cable is just a minor issue, might also fit the EFI throttle body. You can keep most of the attachment parts you still use like header tank, rad, intercooler, alternator etc. You can also keep the fuel setup, MFI fuel pump will work on any EFI system.

Right.. So either way I look at it its not simples at all. Wouldn't wanna just use the bottom end, as my head on the MFI will need rebuilt too. Plus the EFI engine is gonna set me back a grand!! How much, on a bad day, would a full engine rebuild cost me? Saves alot if bother if I just got it rebuilt. Heard someone saying it would be over a grand too. Ive got £1500 to spend at the mo.

Cheers boys!

Is this not an option at all then? Or is this the only "elaborate modification" i would need to do?

You can probably tell im not the most clued up on this!
