New RS1600i owner, two questions!
Hi all
just finished fettling my RS16i and took it out for the first time this weekend. Loved it by the way, i've had alsorts in the past including XR2's, mk2 RS2000, mk1 escorts including 1300 sport and RS1600. Sold a 944 S2 to buy this and I prefer driving this than the porsche any day!
anyway on to my questions.
1. when cold the car will not idle and "kangeroos" on decelleration with no throttle. It also did this after filling up with petrol the other day when the car was warm, after 5 mins or so its fine. Any thoughts? is it the fuel cut off valve malfunctioning or a faulty cold start injector??
2. When giving it some revs and backing off the throttle (i.e coming into a corner using engine braking) it pops and crackles a bit (sounds good!). is this normal or is it running a bit rich?? (its got a scorpion manifold back stainless system on).
3. anyone got a sunroof seal they want to part with!!!??
Looking forward to getting it to some shows next year!!
Cheers
Mark

Hello there and welcome any pics of your RSi, what colour is it?
In answer to your first two questions it could be that the fuel shut off valve is not working properly, MarkN explained this on another thread
hope this helps
Cant help you with the sunroof seal though

The overrun valve is opened when the engine is at normal operating temperature, the throttle is fully closed and the revs are above 1500 (I think) rpm and dropping.
The two cars implement it into two different ways. The RS1600i's ECU controls the valve. When it detects all of the above conditions it opens the valve and allows the plunger to drop. When this happens BOTH the red and amber lights illuminate on the speedometer. They do not work seperately.
The XR3i has no ECU, so instead it has a speed-sensing relay behind the dash that monitors the tacho signal and when the conditions are right this opens the valve. It doesn't have the lights on the dash so it is not obvious that this is happening.
When someone converts an RS1600i to run on a distributor they tend to forget that without the ECU working the overrun valve won't function. This being the case the car will hestitate and kangeroo on overrun. It would be possible to fit the XR3i speed sensing relay to solve this but for some reason people don't seem to do it.
You can check that the overrun system is working correctly by getting the engine up to operating temperature, and opening the throttle slightly from under the bonnet. When you release it you should hear a "click" from the valve on the back of the fuel distributor. If you don't then the system isn't working. The cause of this is nearly always the contact on the throttle.
The econolights on carb fed Fiestas, Escorts and Cortinas are all operated via two vacuum switches. On these cars the two lights do work separetely, but on the RS1600i they always work together.

hiya mate, put some pics up if you have any
mine sounds like theres an air raid going on when i back off the throttle so i wouldnt worry bout that

cheers mate! As you say it seems to be pointing towards the fuel cut off valve, I am guessing the plunger is not fully seating as well maybe?? I'll have a look now!
Mines black by the way 5 owners, originally from Norfolk (Norwich I think) now in Sheffield (reg A320 JCE). Its got ford history to 80'000 and currently reads 105'000. fully polybushed, newish koni adjustables still on, stainless scorpion exhaust, braided b/lines. its had its fair share of welding but its all been done well. I'm going to have the bonnet sprayed next week as the paint has been polished through, then she will be complete! (apart from the dash which i will fit soon!, mines cracked to death!)
I'm going to try some Yokohama A509's on the front as it has some cheap rubish on at the mo.

Nice RSi i like the black ones but black fords have always been bad luck for me
Just pop the hose off the metering unit and see if theres any dirt/gunk around the fuel flap and bowl. If there is any give it a clean with carb cleaner

Looks good mate before altering to much make sure all the standard settings are correct, metering unit base flap, throttle body clean, air screw is clean, plug gaps ok and then set mixture all basic stuff and any mot station will probably set the c/o for a small fee, which could also be the popping that you get when you throttle off (maybe to lean).
