Protein Shakes
As we all know, there are lots of protein shakes on the market.
What made you decide what one you bought?
Price, brand, contents, taste etc?
I'm looking to buy my first lot and really don't know what to go for.
Can you recomend what I should buy and state why please
Thanks

Add milk or water, and chop in a banana. Tastes nice and lasts a long time. I don't think you'll get cheaper than that.

Choc mint, or choc orange. They mix perfect double servings and taste great with water or milk. Get yourself a shaker mixer from the site aswell. They actually have their own-very good forum. I didn't rate bulk powders service and had stomach cramps with their stuff.

Do your home work, look at the amount of protein per serving and and the amount of grams per serving, i've found MY PROTEIN to one of the best for g's per serving of good clean Whey and digests easily and mixes fantasticly compared with most!
However the only way to see whats best for you is just to get out there and try them.

What is their Flavouring system like, Stu? Is it easy to use, and does it taste good? I use a banana but would buy the flavour banana if it was good. Does it need lots of drops to get a strong flavour?
Cheers mate, Benni.

Right, im prob going to go for the my-protein but was wondering if anybody had heard/used USN.co.uk's whey protein?
Reason im asking is a guy in work is in a relation with them (he does strong man contest in Latvia) and can get me a good discount, but id rather have whats best for me over what the cheapest.
Cheers

First question you have to ask yourself is what do you want to acheive from your training? Diferent 'shakes' for different applications.
Secondly everyone is different, people get better gains from different things and everyones tastes are different also!
May just be a case of experimenting with advised powders untill you find one that works for you.

I would personally buy whatever one you can afford and what one you find works for you. We are all different and react to shakes differently so give a few a go. For it to be effective you first have to consume it and you would be surprised at the tubs of stuff I have given away as I cannot stomach them. Not too effective for me in someone elses guts.
Also I don't think any of us on here are of a level that it really makes that much difference to us does it??? We are all hobby, not competative, weight lifters. Any additional protein is better than nothing imho.

i totally agree Kieron.
Protein is protein, it will all work and do what its meant to do.
Where the differences lie are the release rates (casein releases faster than whey), the carb contents, the calorie content and the bcaa profiles.
All whey will contain bcaa (branch chain amino acids), some will be more rich than others. The real world difference wont be hugely noticable unless you are 100% strict with your diet and know what a slight change in your nutrition feels like imo.
Its also worth noting that some people are lactose intollerant and wont be able to digest protein produced from dairy sources, so a pea protein or similar would be needed

Thankfully all the shakes mentioned here are of higher quality than likes of maximuscle etc as these are all made up of cheap whey and loaded with sugar etc and made more for taste than quality. As already said anything is better than nothing really just go with anything mentioned in this thread and you should be ok
Personally prefer unflavoured so i can have diff flavoured shakes all the time rather than 1 flavour every day

nutrisport 90+ protein
as far as i kno contains the most protein compared to all other readily available powders, cheap considering its 5kg tastes nice and works
pluss this particular one only has around 3g carbs in it per serving so great for slimming up, they also do one for bulking up.
think its something like 56g of protein per shake also.

For 5kgs you get 90 servings. In the Bulk Powders one you get around 160 servings. So in reality, if you worked out 90 servings in the Bulk Powders one, you'd be probably getting more protein again per serving.
Does that make sense?

I used to use egg whey protein which was mixed with milk but found I had very strong urine and had constant guts ache, it wasnt pleasant I I never got much from it Im sure. This year Ive started to use SCI-MX GRS5 protein for post exercise <30min replenishment and was amazed at how much I was absorbing compared to the egg whey I used 5yrs ago. The GRS5 is tasty, I had Vanilla and can be hand shaken, I dont suffer the next day with aches and lack of power so much as I used to and would recommend using it.
I just changed to SCI-MX MRF ready for the new year where I plan to hit the gym harder, Im currently sorting diet, proteins, Carbs and exercises and have been recommended the Meal Replacement Formula for lean muscle gain without adding unwanted fat, this is part of a 6x meal a day diet and is suitable for post exercise replenishment aswell. The MRF is heavier to eat though so I would recommend a blender for a really really creamy mix, its delicious. I will have to post if it has made any difference in the new year, and am looking to get trim for June/July holiday time.
I will say you need to use one that is recommended, easily sourced and one that you like the taste of or you wont drink it. There is so much on the market that I would say visit somebody the sells a range you like the taste of and get their advice, if they are big/fit/powerful as you want to be then use what they recommend, they should know their products if they have had such good results on them! Best of luck
