Default Protein supplements for muscle building....

Just got a home gym in for a bit of a comeback to my early days of Karate

Now obviously i want to build rapid muscle...not with steriods ....now i read that i need around 160grams a day of protein....i probably naturally get around 100 a day due to being a big tinned fish eater plus meat every night...

What is a good supplement to say get a 50/75/100g hit in one go..or dont it work like that???

Unfortunately even the most genetically gifted of us cannot perform this feat.

Also if you expect results over night I am afraid you will be sorely disappointed, but it does depend on how much size you want to put on.

A good rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight at least. For growing you are looking at 1-1.5grams/lb

They say the body can only absorb 30 grams of protein at a time, so split your meals up. I use a protein powder (maximuscle) and take it with breakfast, midmorning and mid afternoon. I eat right after training so don't take it in the evening.

I would say yes, if you buy a good one. You may also get some added amino's, vitamins etc that you won't find in a meal.

When people ask me why I'm drinking it, the usual reply is 'you try eating the equivalent of 6 tins of tuna each and every day'. A chocolate milkshake is far easier and nicer.

But a balanced diet is essential, so don't rely on them too much, as I said, I have mine between meals

Like i said on another post, just for joe public and not profesional builders a good diet will be better then shakes and bars....

Protien and amino/chain acids help muscle to build and recover. If you like tuna eat lots of this as it has protien and is rich in omega 3 oils which helps to breakdown fat.

When i was training(not that im a professional) empty stomach cardio first thing in the morning then it was porridge then about an hour or so later a shake....Mid morning was chicken....Lunch was veg, chicken and fruit with a shake and then i would train in the evening for about an hour and half a shake straight after. I would then have more meat like steak with veg...

I work long hours and am out on the road alot so i dont really have time to balance my meals that well.....

I was over-weight when i started training so i didnt need the carbs to build.

It all depends on what you want to do.......Get big or be lean????

Cant see why you want bulk for karate anyway, flexibility and speed are more useful in martial arts than muscle mass anyway IME.

Guess thats true to a certain extent about it staying with you, but on the other hand i did taekwondoe for years and used to fight in my uni team etcyears ago, but it wouldnt do me much use these days cause i dont have the flexibility for the kicks and stuff, so some of it is more useful than other bits.

Phil, minor body build as in what..... If you seriously want to be bigger then just going to the gym then you need to start traing for long amounts of time and weighing your food and all the rest of it that goes with it...

You may even find it profitable to go on some sort of gear, everyone thinks that if you on gear then you must be a freek but i would lay lots of money on the fact that most of the body builders who are at novice level are on the gear.

Do what your comfortable with Phil,
I am slightly overweight by about 3 stone and go to the gym but i couldnt be doing with the healthy food/ eat 3 times a day lark, i in a way made me feel ill as i am a 1 or 2 meal a day person who likes to eat what i like rather what i have to by rule if you understand.
Some people can keep a disiplin (however you spell it) but i cant
But going to the gym has toned me up and made me abit fitter as i can play footy for longer without coughing a lung up, but i am still a chunky sod

ima, good protein powder/shake here :

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pag...&np=1&cpid=629

currently on offer and tastes nice which is rare for a protein shake! common belief is to try and eat 1g protein for every 1lb in b.weight but i seem to do ok with less than that as i'm not mad on high protein foods.

A product called COMPLETE by LAMUSCLE is quite a good product if you wish to strength train and loose fat at the same time but in an ideal world you would want to bulk up to feed your muscles for growth, then cardio to cut up but a good anticatabolic would be advisable if cardio'ing to save you loosing muscle mass aswell as fat.

As said above Cardio in the morning is a great thing if you have the time for it as your body has nowhere to turn for energy other than your fat stores and consume protein be it a steak or shake within 30mins of your workout.

Goto BODYBUILDING.COM for info it's a great site and some suppliments are dead cheap there, just have to wait for them to come over from the states.

Sorry, but every statement above is complete bollocks

1) Training for long amounts of time - NOT NEEDED
2)Weighing your food - He isn't Dorian Yates and neither are 99.9999% of the population who train. Get the basics right of enough protein and you will you can judge the rest from the mirror and how you feel.
3) Taking gear is a serious as taking any form of Drug and should be made on an educated and reasoned basis, and making a sweeping statement for what is essentially a beginer is outrageous

Everyone is different and telling him to spend hours down the gym is a sure fire way of burning him out and then loosing interest. I spend less than 45 mins in the gym and train 3-4 times a week. If you train properly(i.e hard enough) you don't need any more.

As far as weighing food goes, please. The only thing I weigh is the wifes tits .

Taking gear for a beginer is ludicrous. You would be suprised with what the correct training and diet can produce naturally. I put on over 3 stone and was training for 5 years before I decided I needed some gear, and then it was only a small amount to take me over my bodys natural ability. As soon as a beginer comes off the gear, they will loose their size, and worse of all motivation. They then realise they need to keep taking the gear and end up hooked. This is not the way to go about it!

My 2 pence

Paul
