Maxxis Tyres - Opinions Please???
I'm gonna be a bit contraversal here... I'd just like to ask what people think of Maxxis tyres?
The reason I'm asking is I was talking to someone today and I recomended a set of maxxis tyres to them, there answer was, i'm not putting them on my car they are shit... I had to ask, where they had formed this opinion? There answer... never heard of them, so they must be shit.
Now the thing is, it's not that long ago that Toyo was classed as a budget tyre and it's only really down to the Toyo marketing people getting the name out there that they are now classed as a high perfomance tyre. Maxxis is a BIG name in karting, they Sponser the BSB and are quite big in the states. We Use Maxxis tyres on our cars and cant fault them...

According to my tyre man, Maxxis are part of TOYO anyway? Eitherway, i fitted a set of 205/40/17 to my missus Focus 2.0 and they seem perfectly fine to me, plenty of grip and quiet to!
Plus they were cheap off gayBay.

It kind of helped that all the journos who blagged tyres said they were 'fantastic' when in reality they were just 'ok'. There was an 'emperor's new clothes' thing going on, and they're now a well respected tyre and have managed to get into the OE market. They've now turned away from the modified car market, as the OE stuff is where the money is.
I can see Maxxis doing the same thing if they've got any sense.

Got Maxis on my MTB too, really good tyre. Haven't used them on any cars or have experience of them but in all honesty I wouldn't fit them. Not because they are shit or anything simply that it still haunts me throwing out a pair of almost new Nankang NS2's that my missus put on my old A4 as the soppy bint decided to save a few quid. Tyres aren't cheap and getting it wrong can prove both expensive and dangerous.
Kumho is a tyre I wouldn't have touched, my brothers M3 came with the KU31 (iirc) on the back and I actually have to admit to being quite impressed with them, especially for the price

Works and plays on track
Not the best performance for track but if you're a sensible driver on the road, they're perfect. Very good wear rate, had two on the back of mine and did 3 track days and about 8000 miles and still had loads of tread on them. Can't fault them for the price.

I agree the MAZ1 is a good tyre. Felt grippy enough on a small track. Little noisy on my dad's mondeo though.
Also consider Hankook. I've got S1's on my focus and can't fault them. Loads of grip, great in the wet and last a fair while too when you rotate them. They have broken into the OEM market too as the S1 is OEM on the fiesta (not looked at any others).
