Default Tuning

I have an old E reg escort 1.6, which I'm just using as a runaround whilst my coupe is off the road, and was thinking of keeping it as a runaround

If I end up doing this, I'd like to tune the escort up a bit, it's not in bad condition with a genuine 71k on the clock

I'm not really a ford person, so have no idea where to start?

yeah, that would be a good start I guess, what can I do filter wise on a carbed motor, just a get a better one, as I'm not sure you can actually use a normal induction kit can you (I've only ever had injection cars)

exhaust would be a plan, current one has a bit of a blow

as for the head, it's gotta come off soon anyway, so getting it ported/polished shouldnt be much of a task while its off, any particular cams that would come recommended?

I'm guessing I could get an exhaust from an s1 (perhaps an s2?) standard or otherwise, always see loads of them breaking.

Ofcourse my other option would be to buy an RS turbo lump and drop it in, but having a turbo lets me down on the reliability side of things I think.
