Default Wanting to know a bit more about Chips?

Admitedly i'm not the most knowledgeable person on chipping cars, just want to know a bit more about it.

I thought each chip in an ECU will have been set specifically for that engine, and that it is not a good idea to buy a secind hand ecu and put it on another car and hope for the best?

And also what is live mapping, and am i right in saying this cannot be done to an ERST?

Oh and can all chips for ERST's be re-mapped anywhere? Or do some of them have to be taken to the original place they were fitted.

(I have an ECU with a BBR chip, and from what i can find out its quite a rare beastie)?

I think they tune your car acording to your chip (Power engineering)
With boosting fueling etcetc

wrong or right

Come some shed some light on the matter

cheers

im not an expert either but i think all a chip does is sets up an unlimited boost setup then the tuner sets the amount off boost and fuelling to match simple as? You cant map an mfi rst you can only do as above if you go efi then yes you have a mappable engine. Someone please correct me if i am wrong

yes u don't need to or can't map a mfi engine !

just chip it and away u go
all that a standar chip does is limit the psi of boost to 10 psi anyhting above that and the engine cuts out
achipped ecu just takes away that 10psi limit and say increases it to 24 psi

ok

in that case though, i have 2 ecu's one is a BBR Eeprom type, and the other is a 3 wire external module, if literally all the ship does is unlock the boost limit why do they remove the old chip and fit a new one.

Why cant the external ones be used?

original ecu's are pre programmed to run the engine at its desired limits
and are the motorola chips

other after market chips are pre programmed to run the in a different way! with increased boost levels

chipping an mfi erst removes the fuel cut and allows a higher boost setting, if you swap to efi the car can run on different management and injectors and can be mapped accordingly. the standard fuel system on a mfi rst can only produce enough fuel for 17/18 psi of boost, to produce this much fuel the system will also need to be re-calibrated as it does not adjust automatically. when boost above 17/18 psi is required the fitting of a 5th injector is needed.

hats wrong m8 !

i was running 22pis of boost without a 5th injector and i was safley running 220bhp

ive been told the fuel pressure on a mfi setup is more than a efi set up so can easily cope with fuelling !
