my escos box was rebilt about 4K ago (it was very tight when they had done it and it dragged a lot - it would move the car forwards even with the car out of gear when the engine started
) in the last 1K its developed a slight whine that can be heard from inside the car at first just thought the gearstick, this has now developed to quite a loud whine and can be heard outside louder than in the car.
its obvious it s box out job, but are there any common rebuild slipups that may have occured? its got the proper Mt75 oil in (castrol FMT) and there is no grining or banging, teh gearchance is lovely and smooth, its just this high pitched whine which gets louder and more intense as the car goes faster, it remains even when the clutch is pressed in when coastng at speed.

gonna try it on ramp with all 4 whells off the ground and get undernearth see if i can find if its the gearbox, transfer box or front diff that is making the noise..
I had a similar noise problem with my saff it turned out to be front diff. the bearings were on the way out and the front shaft seals started to weap oil which is the first sign of movement in the diff bearings.

how much backlash should the be in teh fornt diff ? mine can turn i'd say about 3/4" before any moevment to the fornt wheels is evident..
Dave, that is back lash in the whole front wheel drive system. There will be play in the CV joints and hub to CV joint splines etc etc.
Get it up off all 4 wheels and get it driven off the floor and make sure it's not the prop centre bearing or something daft.
Do you know about the long screw driver to the ear method? If not, touch the blade of a screw driver to the suspect noisy part and then stick your ear on the screw driver handle.
