XR3i Valve strem seals - Oh s!@*
Anyone got any ideas. Sat in my garage this morning with the intention of renewing the valve stem oil seals on my H reg XR3i, as is been running a touch smokey
Now ive got the rocker cover off, taken off the rocker arms, compressed the first spring, removed the collet and then "dink" the valve drops and i cant pick it out from the guide.
So has anybody got any ideas as to how i pick the valve out without taking the whole head off as this was only supposed to be a mornings work.

u could try a magnit on a stick or a rod of tig welding wire and a bit of super clue but your chances are slim .u needed to bring the piston on the cylinder your working on to top dead centre so the valve couldent fall fully through numbers 1 and 4 are at the top at same time as is 2and3 at the top at same time probably gona have ta take the head of its not hard good luck

You do mean it's dropped completely out of the guide?
Ooh! I'd just love a chance to have a go at that prob!
If it's dropped completely inside, can you get a looped wire round the stem, and carefully turn the engine to get it up in the port?
Let me know .. I have a clever idea to get hold of the stem (I think it will work, too)

You can try to take out the plug and insert an L-shaped wire from ti with which you can try to lift the valve up. If it's completely of the guide, then it's the head off.

Dont get me wrong, I aint lazy. I would dealrly love to change the head gasket if I knew how!!
I have a full head set ready to put on but I also want to get a new cam, pully and cam belt if im gonna do that as well. I opted to the seals only this time because I was told it was a fairly easy operation.

It is, normally mate ...
The trick is to drop the piston down the bore a bit .. then feed in a load of that nylon washing line (comes out so easy afterwards ... Then turn the engine back up on it to hold the valves up. Done this several times over the past 20 years!

Have found a long magnet that is perfect for lifting valve stems up through the head. Problem is that I have since had the oppurtunity of getting and upated ported, polished head that is already fitted with new springs a uprated cam and new lifters. Bloody typical!
