Lip at the top of cylinder bores? HELP needed
ive just been progressing an engine rebuild on Evilfranky's FRST today, the compression was well down on all cylinders so we are rebuilding the head, replacing gaskets/seals, lapping all the valves in etc, replacing pistons rings (also new big end and main bearings now)
we took the pistons and con rods out and the big end shells were worn down to the copper so a new set of those will be on order, as will a set of main bearings
The problem is the cylinder bores, just where the pistons reache top dead centre, there is a lip. as if the piston rings have worn the bore away, and the area above the piston at tdc appears to be at the same diameter it originally began as.
the rings he's bought are from Burton and are standard size, would Burton exchange them for oversize ones if necessary?
is this normal?
does this mean that the block needs to be rebored? and new oversize pistons and rings be fitted?
or do the cylinders need to be re-honed and only oversize rings fitted to the standard pistons?
thanks in advance for the help lads

Yes I'm affraid it will require a rebore and new oversize pistons. This will entail a full engine rebuild, so best to have the crank checked and re-ground if necessary along with new shells to suit.

Right then. Cheers for the replys lads, but i'm wondering if getting a replacement block second hand (one that dosn't need reboring) will be a cheaper alternative???
Just that, once my block is rebored, the cost of getting bigger pistons etc...its just getting mad now
Is a FRST block the same as a ERST?
How much am i looking at to regrind the crank?
Or how much for a new block roughly???
Any help as always is appreciated

The FRST block is the same as the 110ps EFI block and the same as some late ERST blocks. Better search for a 110ps block as they are probably cheaper and in a better shape for the same age. Check that the block has the places for the crank position sensor and knock sensor machined. If those exist, then any 1.6 CVH block is ok, apart from the rare Sierra one.
