ford cvh gearbox differences?
ok, iv got a s2 rs turbo, and my gearbox has blown. as a temp replacement due to low funds im just goin to thrown on any old box to get me around, and then replace with an lsd item as and wen i can afford it.
my question is this. im hearing all kinds of old wives tales that diesel boxes r spose to b stronger and all this, and that the RS boxes off the s1 and s2 and the fez rs r stronger. but whilst reading through some technical specs and checking part numbers with ford, it doesnt seem that there is much difference in the internals of the box other than clearly the s2 box has an lsd and the boxes have differing ratios. are there actually any strength differences in the boxes themselves? if not im assuming sumthing like a fiesta rs box wud b the same strength and an xr type box, just with different ratios??
i ask because i can acquire a temp replacement box, a standard 5 speed cvh box, possibly an xr3i item, for 50 quid with a month gaurantee, just wondering if it is significantly weaker than an RS item or if it just lacks an lsd.
any info on this would b greatly appreciated, and it could dispell the long time myth of exactly how much beta if at all the diesel box is

all cvh gearboxs are the same strength, rs turbo boxes are no stronger than the xr3i ones at all, just have different ratios in them, the diesel box has a longer 5th gear, for strength fit either a uprated rs turbo box, or an MK6 Escort IB5 Box, with the starter at the front of the box

wel im glad i got the answers i wanted, as iv just bought a standard non rs box to throw on for the time being, and im going to use my old broken box as a basis to build up a new box to wotev spec i want, then fit it when funds and time allows.
seems the best option.
i was just fed up of phoning places and being told that a diesel box would b better than an xr box because its stronger, sum ppl believe far too many myths these days

some people still say diesel boxes are stronger, ive read lots of times that they are all the same,
the company who is installing my ib5 box right now, said the same thing, they are no stronger and hes been in business years, just installing gearboxes

wel im also keepin my eye out 4 an mtx75 box i think it is? that sound right? i think its off like a mk5 esc rs2000, my mechanic seems to think that would b a gd bet, nice strong box and a gd conversion to do apparently, so i may go that route if 1 turns up

Sandy the MTX75 is the uprated stonger gearbox recommand it if ur going to have some high BHP
And yes ford did use it in the mk5 escorts RS2000 i think u may need to get drive shafts as well for this gearbox but not to sure.

it wil only go ahead if the 1800 zetec engine in my mechanics garage finds its way into my engine bay, if so, i wil be going 4 a significant power increase so an mtx75 box wil b findin its way in to match to cope with the increase

I don't want to dispel anyones advice here but I am 99% sure that the RS turbo boxes do have additional strengthening webs in. There was an article in either FF or Pf a few months back that was really good on the history..or if you want to try and find a company in Southport called Gearbox Exchange and reapir service (GEARS), it was that gut that wrote it.
If you really want it, Pm me and I can post you a photocopy.

The only are where the S1 and S2 boxes are stronger than teh rest, is that they use slightly larger gear teeth in the crownwheel and its pinion. Othervise they are teh same as the rest from apart the lsd of course.
Diesel boxes are stronger only if one means the mk6 escort diesel IB5 box. Same goes for the escort 1.8 zetec box (not the 130ps version with MTX75). These have a couple of bigger bearings and different syncro desing (double syncronised) for the first gears.

The article in March PF reads:-
"The S1 rs turbo however used a different casing-a v85tt bellhousing and a v85wt top casing.Although identical looking, to the 84tt they had extra strengthening webs cast into the inner part of the casing and extra webbing cast around the front mount boss, an area that was prone to breaking"
