Default Amal Valve

The Amal Valve on my cosworth is making a metallic type rattleing noise when I hold the revs at a certain level, does this mean that it is shaged and what tell tail symptoms would I notice ie: boost problems etc.

Also I've noticed lately that there is oil residue comeing from the turbo and through the intercooler and into the plenum chamber, and the plugs seem a little on the black side, could the Amal Valve cause any of this or am I looking at differant problems here.

Any advice, or if you have had similar prob's please let me know.

Not sure why the amal valve would make a metallic rattling as it's basically only a solenoid. Are you sure the noise is coming from it?

The oil is a sign of worn seals in the turbo, this usually is a result of wear in the bearing.

Yes mate defo coming from the Amal Valve if you disconect the terminals it stops, you can also feel it.

As for the turbo oil prob I have just fitted a bailey breather because at first I thought that this would be the reason for the oil discharge.

Not really sure what the Amal does, just know that it controls the actuator in some way.

tosh,

I had to replace my amal valve recently because it was "clicking" when you wiggled the wires that go to it.

Maybe at a certain rev, the vibration frequency is making internal contacts move, hence it clicking on/off very fast and making the noise you descrfibe.

Try to just switch the ignition on, don't start the engine, and wiggle the wires, if it clicks on/off, I suggest you replace it.

Also, do you have a turbo damper ? If it's not adjusted properly, it would make a "zing" type of noise at certain revs too.

Nothing concrete in the above, but I hope it helps all the same

frog,

I tried wiggleing the wires with the engine running but it didn't make the noise, but when I turn the ignition on you can feel it click once?

As for the damper its OK "I know what you mean by that I've had that before when the friction washers resonate when it's not adjusted right.

Sounds like the amal valve could be on its last legs, maybe the noise is it oscillating on and off very fast. You can disconnect it and remove it to be sure, plumb the actuator straight to the compressor housing (you just won't be able to get full boost with it gone).
