stalls on cold start

stalls on cold start
We've just bought Escort Elcipse 1.3 1990.
When we start it up it idles about 500rpm and stalls if you try to drive it.
Once its warmed up it goes lovely, but its just that initial pull away.
Any ideas?
Changed spark plugs, and air filter and blown through pipes in case they were blocked. But even with choke out it stalls the first time you pull away unless you dip the clutch quick enough.
