It looks like im going to need to get these changed. What is the cheapest option. I have no idea what someone will charge for this, but im planing to do it myself. How much does a a replacement set cost. and will i need to replace the head bolts?

doubt wether u can do em without takin the head off to be honest but maybe someone can say why they think u can. take ur head off and take cams an lifters out and ul need valve spring compressor to take valves out.ford list special tool to remove cos ther quite deep. If ur very confident u can split the old ones off by using a long screwdriver with the end sharpened and tapping with hammer but be careful not to damage the spring cup seats under the guides. if u then find a socket size that the new guide sits nicely in u can tap them home with extension on this an little bit wd40 on new guide. ul hear an feel wen it seats.replace everything as it came out, and if valves are black clean with rotary wire brush.use cometic cam cover gasket as ther reusable, ford ones are rubbish.Clean head and block faces with fine wet and dry and use standard 4x4 h/gasket 10 quid from woodfords at moment, and new head blots.replace any other gaskets u disturb, inlet manifold etc.jobs a perch.

Testing the future
www.cosworth.com and follow links for sales and engines for a catalogue of yb engine parts. much cheaper than ford for most parts.
to order, call Jeremy Scott on 01604 598653. prices are ex. VAT and carriage is 8.50 for ANC next day.
no reason that you can't do it yourself if you're careful. the hardest part of the job is compressing the valve springs to remove the collets, cap and spring so that you can get to the seals. if you can do this with the head still on (using compressed air to keep the valve closed), it's your best bet. otherwise you need new head gasket and bolts and the cost really starts to mount up.
if you've got the right tools, it's an easy diy job and can be done with the head on.

only problem with doin job with head still on is that u cant clean the valves and relap them in.Forgot to say b4 valves should be relapped wen new stem seals fitted. Good practice to anyway.

I thought only a pinto engine could have the stem seals done without removing the head?
My mechanic for the pinto quoted around 100 quid to do them so 600 seems a bit steep but it is a cossie I suppose so anything is possible price wise!

in theory you can do this with the head still on but in practice it is a real fanny on. the cotters are usually tight to remove even with a valve spring compressor and the head on a banch let alone with the head still on. somehow you have to loosen them and the only way i've found to do this is to pour oil down the plug hole and then turn the crank till the oil comes out, put the plug back in and wack the retainer with a socket (about 27mm i think) on an extensing. this loosens the cotters and you can then compress the spring. if you dont do this, when you try to compress the spring the valce just goes down with the springs. its really a complete fuck on and its better to be off ya head!

valve seals
In my experience the valve guides will be worn as well, the best route in my opinion is to take the head off yourself strip off the manifolds and send it to someone like Cylinder head developments in Bromsgrove get the guides replaced new seals and regrind valves head should be ok for another 60-70000 mls.
