As title has any one ever herd of the pick up on the diff of an escort s2 bc gearbox spinning and not transmitting drive to the Speedo cable, cable and pick up gear that sits in the box appear to be fine.....

Usually shagged diff bearings, grab hold of inner CVs and see if there's any play.

Never seen the drive come off the diff but I guess anything is possible.

Yea I grabbed the right driveshaft whilst removing the cable and there was no play....the reason I think it’s the pick up in the box is because when the plastic drive was removed from the top it was very tight in the holder and difficult to move. I had to clean both the inner and the outer And remove some of the plastic to make it spin freely in the holder...so I thought the worm may not have been able to turn it and sheared its lugs off ?
