Default ticking/clicking/wha in rear drum ---completely lost!

So I have a really annoying tick tick tick or more of a wha wha wha from my rear left drum when ever I apply the brake. However this stops if I pull the handbrake slightly and then apply the brake pedal. Also when I am stationary and press the pedal the rear left drum makes a ticking sound. The hard I press on the pedal the more ticks it makes. Both sounds are different to each other. I have just pulled the whole thing apart, cleaned, checked everything and it all looked fine. The only thing i noticed was that the trailing piston in the caliper was depressed further in than the leading side. No idea if this is normal or not. After reassembly, both noises are back. I am completely lost......any ideas as the what the hell is going on?? I hate drums....why do they still use them!!

2011 MK2 Ford Focus.

Cheers
Brent

Are they adjusted equally and correctly?

Try swapping the drums from side to side see if the noise moves.

Think I have it sorted now. It was bugging me too much so I pulled the until apart again this morning. I had a feeling it was the self adjuster at fault, ie not adjusting both pads evenly so they made contact at the same time. This time I wound it in a lot further so it could really "adjust". Seems to have done the trick. Both the stationary clicking and braking clicking have gone. Lets see if it stays away!
