Air temp sensor location ?
Hello folks,
I think I've messed up ! Dose any one know if having the ats in the inlet manifold as apposed to the inlet pipe will badly affect the perfomace of the motor ? It's a Zetec turbo so I've had a custom inlet pipe and removed the ats as the Ho inlet manifold already had one in ! But now I'm wiring an Omex to it and it's saying in the instructions that for turbo applications the ats needs to before the throttle plate . Will I be ok or am I'm just over thinking it again

Cosworths have the air inlet temp sensor on the inlet manifold as that’s the last point of measuring before the air enters the head so surely that’s going to be most accurate?

I’d like to know if there’s a reason behind needing it before the throttle? Surely knowing the exact temperature before it enters the valves is better rather than at another point of the engine where it could of changed by the time it reaches the inlet manifold?

Charge pipe is easiest, and at a location least likely to suffer heat soak.
Inlet manifold is probably worst place...because of heat soak which can result in false readings.
Ultimately if charge cooling is good though it shouldnt be a huge issue and it will also depend on whatever the tuner is doing when it sees various temperatures.

Interesting Stevie, you’d think the heat soak would also affect the air in the inlet manifold but the sensor wouldn’t know if it wasn’t near?

If you place a sensor in a very hot location...ie the intake manifold, it can do nothing but register heat whether it is a true reflection of the actual charge air temp or not.
Mostly a problem after stopped, slow moving traffic etc etc where it can register very high temps.
But given the low time air spends in the manifold, it will not be too adversely affected by the hot manifold/engine itself.
Just install the sensor in the charge piping prior to the throttle, after any charge coolers, and ideally away from any other heat sources.
Although sensors are cheap, if you really wanted you could throw a couple on to test various locations.
