Default Ford Kuga - Engine Malfunction... DPF??

Hi All,

Bought a secondhand Kuga back in Jan, 2.0 litre Diesel. A few months ago I was driving along and the car beeped at me and flashed up engine malfunction. I didn't drop into limp mode, however the acceleration I enjoyed previously was not there. Some quick googling led me to believe it may be the DPF filter, although the DPF filter light did not come on (I assume this is the orange L shaped light) the warning remained after stopping the car and restarting, however on the way home I gave it some high revs along a long stretch of road. once I reached my hose I noticed a "Burning Rubber band" smell from the back of the car, which again google told me is the kind of smell the DPF filter burning off makes.

Huzzah the next time I started the car the warning had disappeared. about 6 weeks later, same thing, engine malfunction popped up. This time I borrowed an engine code reader and it confirmed something to do with the DPF filter being below efficiency, I can't remember the exact code, (I want to say 2001 or 2002 maybe?) regardless, a good run and some revs and it disappeared.

I generally only drive the car on fair distance runs to work, which is a 90 mile round trip, however it appears to be becoming more common, and yesterday not only did the engine malfunction light up, but also the DPF?? light (Orange L shaped light?)

I'm assuming at this point that it needs to be looked at and maybe cleaned out properly? do I need to have this done specifically at a ford dealer? or can I just pop down the local halfords autocentre? I've read that Ford can be a bit of a nightmare at getting decent customer service out of regarding dpfs?

Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
