Ok,my cosworth had a noisy lifter 4 past year or so wen cold.when warmed up alittle it was fine,so about a month ago i bought a set off Matt lewis and fired them in. The night i put them in i noticed after a minit or so of starting the car the engine was making a kind of ticking/rattling but once warm was fine. Well its not got any better,wen starting from cold its still doing it,hard to tell if it is a rattle or tickin but as soon as i rev it,just alittle it goes away. Only on idle,only when cold. OoI dont know wether it is related to lifters or sumthn else. Im at the stage im thinkn of firing my old lifters bk in to see wot hapens..... Engine rebuilt 2-3k ago,ground crank,acl bearings,Oil pump frm matt lewis,small ends. Runing 10 60 mobil 1, oil presure seems ok cold is 60ish, warm is around 30-35psi..
Im losing the plot with the old girl lol its giving me gray hair and makes me crabbit. Any input wld be much apriciated

Not just the standard 'cossie' piston slap when cold is it?

 

Well i did think that mate. Iv no realy delt with piston slap b4 so no sure how that sounds + i thot with engine been rebuilt it shldnt be....

 

Remember Cossies have forged pistons and their cold running clearances are larger to allow for expansion as they warm up, hence you get noise from them whilst cold.

 

True... I can live with it i just didnt want to be doing any damage by continuing to run it. As long as i doesnt get any worse!

 

Even when Cossies were new they sounded like a bag of spanners when cold.

 

They have a mahle piston which is a high pressure cast piston the skirt clearances are 1.5 - 2 thou "

early 3 door engines had centre line wrist pins and had piston slap all later 2wd and 4x4 engines had offset wrist pins and they were quiet from cold

If its excessive you can check on the downward stroke and the piston starts to drop down(turning by hand) you can apply a little pressure to the top of the crown and it will drop a mm give or take

 

Aw christ knows! I hink im gona put old lifters bk in n see if it jst goes bk to the (old) obvious lifter noise. My misis just had a baby girl thismorning so cozy will be at bk of list now lol 4 a while...

If i hadnt replaced the small ends i wld have considered them more. New ends from matt lewis and machined in by my local engine builder/engineer who had a good reputation. I fired the car up the her day after it lay for bout a week and it was sound!
