Default Warning

To all you owners of 1.25 or 1.4 petrol mk6 fiestas please be careful. My little car had a coil pack failure which was intermittent drove it about 6 miles and now find myself with a totally knackered car. According to ford these engines are disposable meaning they will not supply any internal components. I have managed to find pistons for it but who knows if the engine will ever be the same again. My advice to you if anything goes wrong stop immediately or avoid these cars completely if you don't already have one. The engines are on the 03 to 08 models and are made by yamaha.

How can a coilpack failing destroy the engine? I've heard of them damaging the ECU but never the engine.

Running it on an intermittent cylinder can though. Caused by the coil pack failure initially. 6 miles of on and off judder = 2 knackered pistons and a large garage bill. On the plus side the ecu is fine.

what garage have you used in swindon, i'm in watchfield and have used the one on the high street but have since started using a mechanic from the stamford in the vale garage as cheaper and good work.

misfiring wont kill a piston, and with a fire on and off thats what you get, maybe if it was sparking on upstroke or something it could damage internals but you wont want to be driving anywhere with it trying to fire back, i expect it would smash its mounts if it was even possible

while the engines are disposable they are also very easy to change
once the front end is off you can whip it out easy
i bought one that threw a rod because of low oil, took the front end off almost whole, threw in a 3000 mile engine and off it went

Sorry that's wrong, the coilpack has not killed your engine. The garage are either talking shite, or there are other problems. Ford coilpacks are VERY common for failing, especially on the zetec se engines (Ford only do 2 different coilpack for all the zetec range iirc) Know of many, including mine that have started failing, but have done no damage to the internals of the engine.
The engines actually appeared in the mk4 Fiesta, so late 90's onwards, and were co-designed with Yamaha, and made by Ford. You're correct, they are disposable, but are so common they can be picked up from a breakers for a cople of hundred quid, that is if yours is really knackered, something I doubt if it's just the coilpack that's given up the ghost!

Maybe lost in communication there the garage are just repairing the aftermath, coil pack definitely failed I know as I changed it leads and plugs and once the car was running it sounded like a bag of nails hence why it's now in the garage I have seen the pistons and they are definitely not telling lies.

The only consequential damage I've seen from failing coilpacks on these is a failed cat.

MIL light on and P0420 dtc "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)"

First time for everything as they say..

Oh lucky me, on piston 4 you could see the ring on it. My own fault for trying to get it off a major roundabout and yes I am kicking myself now.. The coil pack failure was a pain but the damage done is huge. Thought about a second hand lump but every scrappy I spoke to with a 1.4 engine had the car in for the same type of issues. New was silly money, that's what annoys me about the disposable bit it would have been cheaper to buy another 03 plate car than a new engine.

No pictures yet but will try and post some, I think with my luck if something can go wrong it generally does.. It all started with a simple coil pack, everything is new and gaps etc were correct. I would love to know what caused it, if anyone has any ideas so I don't do it again. My bank balance can't take it..

I bet its cheap supermarket fuel that has caused it combined with a misfire.
Seen a few knackered engines due to cheap fuel. Not just fords!

tho you are correct in both ford and autodata stating they are a disposable engine however you can rebuild these engines i have rebuilt many any decent engine machining shop will be able to supply you with shells, piston rings etc... along with the appropriate torque settings

if you run with a cylinder down wont the unburnt fuel cause borewash and possibly damage the rings?

They do say that with audi s2's if a coilpack dies (aby model) and you have to drive it home to unplug the injector for that cylinder so it does not damage it anymore.
