Default Focus ST2.5 2008 Snapped timing belt

Hi a friend of mine has just bought a 2008 focus st from an internet auction site and when the car was delivered he found that the timing belt had snapped . Could any one tell me if these engines bend valves or how much damage this would have caused is it worth just trying timing it up and fitting a new belt ??? Any advise would be highly apprecated thanks mike

Pretty sure it will have bent valves at the minimum. I don't think there are many engines that are non interference.

Defo valves.

A lot of the failures on ST timing belts are down to the aux belts snapping and taking out the timing belt.

They are meant to last 10 years according to some info on the web.

Perfect time to go find an RS engine and drop that in

Knew it was 100 odd k but wasnt sure.

Remember some one put a link to a site that had all that info and I looked. Your right.

Seems very high IMO but guess there is reason for it.

the early focus zetec's were 100k or 10 years.

It shouldn't be a massive job to replace the valves if thats all was damaged. Have a look since its scrap now anyway. can't be too cheap for an entire engine replacement.

Seems a massive mileage to have the change interval at. I mean, what has actually changed in design of the belt / pulleys to men that they will last 4 times longer than a belt from a car 10 years ago?

I'd say 9 times out of 10 it's tensioner / pulley failure that knackers engines, it's very rare for a cambelt to snap of its own doing!

Zetecs are 100K or 10 years, the 5 pot volvo (Duratec in Ford speak) may be the same, but in the real world you always change before this, as said it's not always the belt but the tensioner can let go.
