Seems a massive mileage to have the change interval at. I mean, what has actually changed in design of the belt / pulleys to men that they will last 4 times longer than a belt from a car 10 years ago?

I'd say 9 times out of 10 it's tensioner / pulley failure that knackers engines, it's very rare for a cambelt to snap of its own doing!
