Default Mk4 1.3 Escort running problems

It started on Monday on the way back from work, pulled up to some traffic lights and it just died, tried turning it over but wouldn't fire. Pushed it to the side and gave it a few minutes, it started but wouldn't idle. It's been fine up until today, it wouldn't idle again when stationary and just died when I went to pull into my drive.

I'm thinking something to do with the fuel, but I've stuck some new leads and plugs on for good measure.
Bare in mind she's only done 30k.

Any bright ideas?

Thanks
Ben.

does the car run on choke?.. does it rev freely when running or does it splutter and cough?

If it's dying when at idle then it suggests the idle valve/solanoid is giving up.. however check to see that al breather pipes are secure and you have no audiable air leaks as these can lean the carb off also.. check all your butterflies are moving freely by opening the throttle from the linkage..
