Default 1.25zetec power loss

hi guys,
my fiesta is losing power. it seems to be ok upto around 3000rpm but doesnt seem to want to go any higher, without going down a hill it wont go over 55mph. when the throttle is pressed half way it picks up steadily but if you floor it the power seems to drop further. Then when you release the pedal the engine chuggs 2 or 3 times and sounds like it has a small backfire thought it could be the exhaust knockin lightly with the chuggin of the engine.. i replaced the fuel filter and ran a bottle of redex through it, checked the plugs and they are all nicely coloured with no marking on the porcelain. i disconnected the MAF sensor which made no difference. there are no misfires, it starts and runs fine.... its just the loss of power on the top end!... are there any other checks i can make before i start buying expensive parts?

thanks in advance for any advice,
Jonny.

I have exactly the same problem. Do you have a heavy vibrating sound from the front end if you put your foot down?

No, I didnt notice that on mine... it just stuttered if I put my foot down! It turned out that the cat had started to crumble inside and had partially blocked itself, I cleared it out by getting upto around 50mph and then dropped it into 3rd gear and the pressure blew the blockage out the back end... probably not the wisest thing to do but it got the cat running sweet again and didnt cost a penny! Im not suggesting anybody should try my method as there is always thebchance u will try too hard and do more damage than good! Be careful if you do!
