Default vw tdi misfire/wont run, now fixed **with pics**

Hi chaps,

A scan revealed my tdi recorded a misfire on cylinder 4, and i suspect it is upon a cold start up, as i get a thin sheet of blue smoke and it does run a little rought.

After a few seconds the mis goes, and 20-30 seconds later the smokes gone too. It really is brief, and not much of an issue, but it irritates me nevertheless.

Low compression - unlikely, as the engine is in a1 health, uses no oil and returns 60+ mpg and never smokes

Weak injector that clears

Dead glow plug

What do you think? I plan to run some injector cleaner through her and possibly swap the GP's, but i would be interested to hear your thoughts - particularly as time is at a premium at the moment.

Thanks guys
Tom

What engine is it?
Modern diesels don't need to use their glowplugs, even in minus figures they only pop on for a few seconds. Not like old diesels.

Sounds like a slight air leak in that one injector? But I am unsure what would cause that?

Dad's gti tdi 130 golf has been doing this, it was coolant temp sensor, was running like a right bag, changed it and its mint again.

You were (seemingly) very close on the air leak comment!

That was also on the list of possibles, but hopefully this (below) was the cause.

Took off the EGR and what a mess!

hmm, mine smokes a little on start up but runs fine all the time, may just whip egr off though as that will probably be caked up badly no doubt.

very common on all the vw tdi's, you should fit a hard pipe/allard egr delete to you 130/150pds

you should keep the EGR really, it makes it run more efficiently after all and keeps emissions down.
