Default no power to the coil

HI as some of you know im in the middle of restoring a mk3 escort.
if we bypass the ignition relay by putting a wire from the battery into the starter motor wiring loom, it will click and turn over. but there is no power to the coil, and the original wiring loom goes from 5 wires into 3 which go to the coil. but turning it over with the key it wont work, its dead.

have tested all the connections and theres power to them when need to be.
checked the ignition relay and thats working
all the earths have been cleaned and connected again

it must be something really simple any ideas as its getting really frustrating
thanks

No you won't as your simply putting power to the starter, you have no ignition circuit etc.

The coil simply has +12V and an earth, the third wire you are talking about is probably green and is for the tachometer (If applicable) and connects to the coils ground side.

Does the black coil wire have a live feed?
