What engine transplant...
Hi all.
I am thinking of a project to do 'on the side' and was thinking about getting a little mk5 Zetec S Fiesta and Turbo'ing it. I have read that charging the standard 1.6 is pretty crap so i was thinking about popping another engine into it and then turbo'ing that. For example i was thinking about a 1.8 Zetec engine... What do you think?
My main query really was will it fit? I know its not going to be a 5 min job but what are my options?
I want the easiest option in regards to fitting a different engine (so dont really have to make custom mounts or change huge ammounts of things such as management or gearboxes) but also it will need to accept a turbo conversion...
Cheers for the help in advance guys!

I'm confused, you said Mk5 fiesta but the picture is a Mk3? Anyway, Rs Turbo lump would be a good conversion, should be an easy fit, chip and boost to 215BHP possibly? Will certainly go in a little Fiesta.
Focus RS running gear would be the most cost effective IMO. Would pretty much just bolt straight in (not sure on the gearbox on this) and I'm sure someone could wire up the RS management into the fiesta loom

thanks for the quick replies!
The mk3 RS was my old car - thats long gone now :-( but i am thinking about getting a Zetec S as a project (as i haven't had one in a while)
Ok so fitting the RST engine - EFI or MFI - what would be easier to get it up an running?

I think that you will struggle unless you have done something like this before. You WILL need to change the management which has its own problems with the dash in the car you are thinking of. Clutch will be an issue too, plus the gearbox wont take much power.
The easiest option is to buy something already done.
I wish you all the best if this is the route you take, but it will not be an easy one, and if it is easy it wont be cheap, thanks Chaffe

Ideally i didnt want to get the old CVH engine but i DO know that they can produce a good decent ammount of power so if this would go in then i would go down that route...
TBH i am good with cars but not really done a custom job like this so i need some guidance and advice really....

The other thing i was thinking - can i not just swap the 1.6 for a 1.8 or 2.0 of the same Zetec engine? Then once its in (or before) i can do the work needed to get a turbo on it?
Just a thought...
Just a thought...
EFI would be more reliable, but if you bought the whole Rs Turbo lump ie, brains, wiring etc then just put the whole lot straight in. The MFI is a bit of a bodge up by Ford but i wouldn't say it was bad. As it's a Mk5 Fiesta i don't know how easily it would fit, it may need custom mounts etc i don't know really, but a CVH isn't a difficult engine.
There's a guy who's turbo'd his 1.6 and is pushing just shy of 200bhp reliably..
Although he's in no hurry to reveal his secrets!
Ben.
I'm hopefully going to boost my Hillman Imp 875cc and i've seen 150BHP out of them.
hmm - maybe thats my easiest option then.... it wont be massive power but good enough for a bit of fun!! at least i wont have to mess with mounts etc.
thanks for the help guys - i would of gone down this route but i heard bad things but i guess it can be done!
Anyone got any advice when turbo'ing this engine then? anything bad that i should bear in mind when doing the conversion?

yeah - turbo'ing it isn't the problem. i know what is required but just wondered if there were any common problems to look out for. i will prob stick with the zetec now as it seems like the easiest option. I have a 6 month old daughter so i prob wont spend all my time doing it anyway...

I know, i was saying 'bodge' because it's not very good, especially compared to nowa days, back then it was the bollocks and tbh, i really like the Rs Turbo engine, it may be an old CVH but i love them.
rite im currently getting the parts together for a 1.8zetec turbo mk5 zetec at the moment.
gearbox needs to be endura or mk4 diesel van. engine mount is unsure but i need to weld a mount to the car for this when i work out what im using, maby a modified cvh mount.
management needs to change, ill be keeping original ecu for clocks ect but omex for engine management.
o.c motorsport do a decomp plate for the 1.6se, you can turbo it for low boost... few on zsoc.com have done this now.
i wouldnt waste your time fitting mfi to the car.. not worth it.
i looked into cvh but more i looked i was told just bite the bullet, if its cheap build with cvh it will spend more time being repaired than driven (the advise i chose to listen too)

i have the 1.8 zetec block for mock up (cost me Ł5 lol)
ill be building the car up first eg brakes, suspension everything painted and finished and then the engine will be done when the car is complete as to just drop it in and the final piece of the puzzle.

Personally I still think the Focus Rs engine is a great idea, looking into it myself.
Noo. It's really not too much effort. I've got a 2.0 blacktop supercharged in a mk4 fiesta. A new engine mount modded in and a few select bits here and there and it's all good!!

well thanks for the help guys - bought the Zetec last night so prob gonna use it as a commuter for a while while i get the bits together and then i'll crack on with the project!!
Hopefully might have it sorted before FordFair!!.... well....maybe lol

i know u are not doing it now but the mk5 fezzy has different engine mounts than a mk3 for the cvh. ive been doing some research my self, for the mk4 fezzy u would have to use a mk3 rs1800 engine mount.
just google it if u need to know anything
just google it if u need to know anything
I will get some photos of the engine mount for you over the next few days if you want them. This is a little pic of the car itslef. Its a 2.0 blacktop, silvertop cam cover for clearance, eaton m45 supercharger, megasquirt 1 v3 ecu, running water injection (fosters can pump with heinekan keg resevoir!!
)

There are 2 routes to go for the engine mount. RS1800 mount on the back of the engine, which is easier but unsupportive as it hangs on the rear only with no front support,
OR
the option i took which is to mod the inner wing to use a focus engine mount
Matt.
