Default Camshaft oil seal....Help!

I have just been told by my local mechanic that my camshaft oil seal has gone thus my 2001 2.0 Zetec Focus is leaking oil badly. He said he would do it for £250 cash.....Is it a job I could do myself (I am ok with tools....not the best though but can do a basic service, change brakes etc) and is it ok to drive with this thing leaking?

Thanks in advance

Engine mount off, cam belt covers off, cambelt off.... Replace oil seal. If it was me I'd be putting a new cambelt kit on (this envolves removing rocker cover) as well as the belt must have got oil on it if its leaking that badly...

Cam seals (mights as well do both) - £10
Cambelt kit - £80 ish....
Rocker cover gasket - £10

I'd expect a garage to charge you £250 for that lot to be done, so I hope your "mate" is doing at least that for £250..!!!

Take you time 4-5 hours... (a garage would take 2-3 hrs maximum)

As said if it's £250 for a new belt tensioner etc as well as the seal, then I'd say that was about right, if not a good price considering where you live.

Thanks guys

I have taken the top cambelt cover off and run the engine.....I cant see any oil coming from anywhere in there but I can see the top part of the rocker cover gasket looking rather sorry for itself. This was replaced because the old one was leaking.....I didn't use any gasket sealant on the new one and I dont know if I should have tightened the rocker cover bolts in a certain order and to a certain torque? I just did the up tightly and that was it......Wonder if it could be the rocker cover gasket now?

Looks more like the RC gasket to me.... but the pic isn't great, imo I'd redo the RC gasket and put a small amount of sealer in the corners where the gasket goes over the cam caps.

i doubt very much its the cam seals! far more likely to be the rocker cover and if you have already replaced the rocker cover gasket once then i recon the cover is warped and will NEVER seal again!!

i had this on my 2000 2l and in the end converted to a silvertop rocker cover as they're harder to warp and use a much thicker gasket which seals FAR better!! if you go this route make sure you get the bolt spacers and rubber seals with the rocker cover as they are fucking dear from ford!!!

Thanks Steve and Phil

I have just applied gasket sealant so hope that fixes it......It says to leave for 24 hours to dry so will know by this time tomorrow if it has fixed it!!

Phil....I have the same, a 2001 2.0 Zetec. I have only had her 2 weeks. She has had one owner from new and he was an old boy who had it serviced by Ford every 8,000 miles. She is now on 112,000 miles. What are these engines like? I have looked an seen the performance figures seem very much like the 1.8 Zetec, only the 1.8 Zetec has a far better fuel consumption? I have done 2 little mods which I hope have improved performance but cant really notice anything. Firstly I fitted Bosch Super 4 plugs and secondly I have run a 3" pipe from the intake of the airfilter housing all the way to the lower grill thus giving a forced air feed.....Not noticed any difference though in performance? Also I have seen an ST170 second hand exhaust for sale, it is the standard Ford one.....Would my 2.0 Zetec benefit from this?

Thanks again guys.

great engines imho. my mum had a 1.8 lx (same year as my 2l) and i learnt to drive on that and drove it the first 2 years i was on the road and the 2l certainly is quicker! also has a stronger gearbox although the ratios are different to the 1.8. fuel consumption wise i get 31mpg from mixed roads and mixed driving moods so not too bad.

engine mods for mine are magnecore kv85 leads, k&n pannel filter and a big pipe from lower grill to intake on air box, and milltek cat back system. goes very well and went even better (and sounded better) with a 4-2-1 manifold on although thats come off now as it was very old and has now rusted through. personally i wouldn't bother with a standard st170 cat back exhaust. with my current mods i recon i'm up only 5bhp from standard maybe a little more. the manifold added a good 10bhp ontop of that.

iirc those bosch super 4 plugs have the 4 electrodes. personally i don't like them as its only advantage is extended service intervals but stops you from gapping them properly. i've always used ngk platinums gapped to 1mm and never had any problems!

2 worth while mods are braided brake lines and st170 front hubs and brakes (or you can fit mondeo mk3 callipers). takes the standard shit setup (that i cooked on the 1.8 just with spirited driving down lanes) from 258mm to 300mm. with a decent set of discs and pads all round its awsome!

mines on 107k, has an oil and filter change every 5k (as i do the odd track day and like a spirited drive) and i've replaced a few tyred components so is going VERy strong!

good luck with yours and any problems send me a pm. i've solved a few including last week the pas high pressure pipe to pump joint leak which you can;t get new seals for unless you spend £95 on a new pipe aswell. i fixed mine with an o-ring and a bit of ptfe tape for about 2p

Thanks Phil.....You really know your stuff

I have just changed the discs and pads on mine as they were terrible.......The new ones are still terrible too! So I can upgrade, this is excellent news as I am sure I have cooked mine already

I looked on Ebay earlier and have seen a silver top rocker cover for a 1.8 16v Zetec Escort......It looks identical to mine so I am watching it!

Would my induction mod work do you think bud? I will take a picture of the front of the grill. I used a 3" reflex port from Maplins for £2.79 that sits in the lower grill and then a 3" diameter aluminium pipe from Halfords for £3.29 that then fits to the bottom of the airbox.....What do you think mate? Also mine has this ESP on it.....Its like traction control but I turn it off as much more fun without it!

sorry for my long post btw

your induction mod sounds better than mine tbh as i don't have a proper end to the pipe and doesn't go all the way to the grill. i'd get a k&n pannel filter for it though aswell.

mine is supposidely an esp model, even says it on the V5, but i only have a traction control button. when i do track days though i normally disable both the abs and traction control by pulling out the fuses, the one down side being the rears are slightly over braked (cos theres no proportioning/load sensing valve on abs models) and therefore do tend to lock up a tad which i don't mind tbh as i like getting the arse end out

yep that rocker cover will fit, just make sure you get the metal bits that go in the bolt holes along with their rubber counterparts and you will have to use the silvertop gasket too. i got mine painted gloss black with a bit of gold metal flake in and along with the stainless bolts it looks pretty good. shame the rest of my engine bay looks filthy and shit

oh and with the st170 brake upgrade you do have to fit the st170 hubs/knuckles but its a simple bolt off bolt on job. hug nut needs torqueing upto 316NM though!!

Thanks Phil

Going to look on Ebay now for the parts you have mentioned as the standard brakes really are crap!

Did you find the K&N panel filter helped? Also bud as you do track days.....What is the best top speed you have had? I had mine showing just under 125mph (On a private road of course!! )
