2WD= 4 pot fixed calipers 283MM vented discs up front and 273MM solid at rear with single slider affair.

4x4= 278MM vented discs up front and 273MM vented at rear (Single slider affair all round IIRC).

So the 4x4 rears have the advantage of being vented and the 2WD's front calipers better than the 4x4's.

No the 4x4 rear calipers are different (Wider) to fit the vented discs.

There is a MONUMENTAL difference in performance between 2wd 4 pots and 4wd single piston calipers, they are in a completely different league, it's no co-incidence most sports cars have multi piston calipers, as to the need for vented rear that is debateable imo.

That's the trouble, the cossie was never designed as such, they all started life as ghia sierras, and were made cossie by way of the engine/other parts, as it was mass produced ford just used bits already in existence, the 4 pots came about on the RS500 cossie used in touring cars etc, due to homologation rules they had to be the same as road cars, they just carried it on with the 3 door(non rs500) and 2wd sapphy.
The hub is different on the 4wd so no doubt they used again what they already had.
The 4wd are fine for normal(legal) speeds but stamp on them in anger at say 100+ and you see a massive difference in stopping power compared with 2wd.
There's lots of aspects of the cossie which were frankly crap being blunt, but nearly ok for 20+ years ago, take the piss poor head design for example, so good they changed it 4 times, cooling system was another weaker area than it could have been.
