Default Air cooled turbo - opinions please!

I heard that some people use air cooled turbos on reasonably large spec cossies and RST's

I know most turbo'd cars have water cooled turbos, but just wondering if anyone has had experience with not water cooling their turbos and how long they last etc.

one of me mates is meant to be water cooled but we left it not plumbed into cooling system - its still being run in so we havent been able to see how it copes yet.

I spose its got advantages for the engine as the engine coolant hasnt got to run through a very hot turbo, but then again the very hot turbo doesnt have cooler water running through it.

Cheers

Tim

I think the only difference is the amount of time you need to let a NON coolant turbo cool down b4 you turn the engine off! IMO

ps s/1's didn't have coolant running through them

i think its to help the cooling the core of the turbo with water cooled and to try and stop cracking from the heat

yeh i mean it has gotta have advantages as far as teh turbo goes else manufacturers woudlnt do it would they

but in fiestas with standard rads they just heat up the coolant too much

yes tbh, the housins that have water/oil shae the capacity for cooling , relying on oil/water for cooling , the capacity being shared , the units without i.e oil only just have a full oil cooled core housing

on smaller units T2, T3 and variants it really doesnt make any differance

water cooled turbo are made so the water temp warms quicker
and is better on fuel plus warm's you up in winter
plus you can shut the engine off early because turbo cool's off
before non water cooled turbo's.but on bigger boost and small
a/r exhaust turbine's you get a lot more heat and you would
end up boiling the water as soon it hit's the unit
