Default focus cooling fan problem..?

hello..
im not sure if its a problem or not really its on a 1.6 focus and all it is basically when you start the engine either hot or cold and have the car heater on when starting or switch it on the engine the cooling fan kicks in.. then it turns off after a few minutes.. i wondered if its to do with the aircon but does it with the aircon off.. if i start the car without using the heater the fan dont come on.... any ideas or is it supposed to do this....
thanks in advance for any help...

have you got it set to screen as that will bring the a/c on (with the fan) but won't turn the a/c light on?

yes the fan comes on with the air con and on the windscreen setting (and fan possition 3 i think) the air con and fan both come on but the light on the air con button doesn't illuminate.

give it a try tomorrow mate and see if thats what its doing.

Exactly what he says ^^ if the heat direction is in the windscreen position the A/C is on (As it's a good dehumidifier so great for clearing the screen) regardless of the blower, this is IF the car is a MK1.5 model, MK2 is the same I suspect, the MK1 did not have this feature. For this reason this position is coloured orange on the control but it's not obvious, check this first.

tried it today but it seems pretty random when it comes on.. started the car without heater on.. turned it on to 1 2 3 heater is on but no engine fan.. then few secs later it comes on so dont seem to matter what its switched to and it has the orange number 3 the car is X reg .. i wondered if the aircon needed charging maybe but cant work out why the engine fan would come on without the aircon.. the only reason i wondered is because even on a freezing morning it comes on first thing and must take longer for the car to warm up... and the revs drop with it on too...
thanks..

What we described above this does not apply to you then as yours will be a MK1, the revs drop due to the heavy electrical demand the fans have and so is normal, I would check your CHT (Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor) this gives the input about temperature to the ECU, it in turn will activate the fans, it also gives the info to the temp gauge but more importantly the info is used for the engines fuelling requires as it's main job is what a CTS would do but in this case it measures the temperature of the metal itself, it is located in between spark plug 2 and 3. If it's gone duff it may be giving incorrect info hence your fans running initially.
