hi just a quick question for anyone that can help me,
ive got an escort gti and its a bit rattley from the bottom end so i want to change the engine bearings,
so my question is can the main and big end bearings be changed with the enging in the car, and i suppose if i want to change the little ends then it would be a head off job?

The big end bearings can be changed with the engine in the car but the main bearings will require the gearbox to be removed so you may aswell take the engine out. The crank may need grinding slightly depending on how much it's picked up.

you can physically change all of them with engin ein situ, obviously sump off, a bit tight for the mains though.
personally i'd be takign engine out and doing it properly, crank as said could be scored of worn.

 

I wouldn't waste your time changing bearings, without at least accurately checking the journals, if they're worn new bearings are going to do a lot.
